well, I'm not super successful socially either so I can't give killer advice, but:

it's like for romantic/sexual relationships. going with the goal of "making friends" is a mistake, just like that of "getting a girlfriend".

it's a mistake because you end up pressuring yourself. you constantly compare yourself to others, and end up thinking you have no chance because X or Y isn't as it should or whatever.



when I moved out, I spent the first months looking for a job, and getting depressed because it didn't get anywhere.

eventually, I joined a badminton club. it didn't make me have 500 friends, but I had good times with people, some I never met again, some I stuck around with, and playing a sport I like. and, despite still being unemployed, I felt good.

I later joined militant groups and it's been one interesting ride since then. and, more importantly, I like what we do, I feel good about myself.


so, find what makes you feel good. socialization happens as a side effect.

besides, you should only lose (or gain) weight if you don't feel comfortable in your body as it is. when I was a kid, I have seen my parents nag my sister about her weight and occasionally pressure her, and I know that this shit is toxic. because after that they wondered why she constantly wore hoodies and wide clothes and generally exposed her body as little as possible. gee, I wonder why? certainly not because you've been constantly telling her that her body is 'wrong'.

my parents occasionally gave us pocket money and never cared what we used it for

but I rarely ever used it, so I ended up with over 2000€ of it

which has been handy lately

Yes they should -- as a parent, you ideally make sure that their decision is sound and that they don't fuck up.

But independence and critical thinking need to be developed, and you don't do so by telling your child that they're too dumb to take decisions on their own.

Most people I met in school/univ were normal people and not drug addicts. Of course, some did smoke weed, but it didn't seem to be a major problem, but I wouldn't know.

However, real drugs problems can arise when children are depressed and find it as a coping mechanism. In such cases, the solution is therapy, repression will only make things worse.
