2020's been a particularly slow year for Nintendo overall. What has Mario, of all things, gotten? Some glorified ROM collection for full price?

Mario also got some random battle royale that's just another Mario Bros. rerelease.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is quite fun, though. Plus it's free.

Yeah you're not wrong. I do enjoy Mario 35 but it isn't the greatest thing I've played or anything

The thing about that game is that it's for a limited time only and I don't think it's free, you have to pay for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Which is overall, no thanks. Also, it came after Nintendo decided to be a killjoy and take down a fangame that plays similarly to this.

Yeah they could atleast not make the 3d All-Stars Collection not a limited-time deal.

I also really don't think it's $60 either. I would've been fine it they sold the thing at 40.

Considering a bunch of people have already played 64 and Galaxy, but not Sunshine, it's more like $60 just for Sunshine. At least that's how I view it since I have played 64 and Galaxy prior to 3D All-Stars.

OK, so it's not really free, but it's only 20 bucks a year. Less than 2 bucks a month. And it lets you play many games online, and it's quite necessary to play for example SMM2. Plus it lets you play a big bunch of NES and SNES games.

Or you can feel forced to use it, since you need it to play some games.

Hey, that's me! I'm one of those people!

Yes, it's a bit pricey, but I don't think of it as paying $60 just for Sunshine. It's $20 for an awesome game (64, I guess mostly due to nostalgia), $20 for a new game (Sunshine), and $20 for another very good game (Galaxy, which also makes me think back to a previous chapter in my life).

But I'm thinking of getting a game voucher, and buy 3D All-Stars and 3D World, so it's 50 for each.

But, yes, it still could be $40/game. But (for like the 17th time in this post) as long as people keep paying $60 for remakes, Nintendo will keep selling them for $60.

Considering what subscriptions aim at people, to have them engage in small payments that can be easy to lose track of, I don't think $20 a year is worth the lack of a virtual console or making online paid. You're not paying for the service, you're paying for access to it; the online is a real head-scratcher because you're not paying for servers either since it's all p2p stuff; you're paying twice basically.

I don't see it justifying the lackluster service. I think Nintendo Switch Online is a scam. They charge you 20 because they can get away with it, that's it, and they remove previously free or a-la carte service and put it behind a subscription.

I still find that a tough swallow since Nintendo makes it deliberately not easy to access older games. It's even worse they put the thing behind a timer to try to invite FOMO to exploit people into paying and preordering for the product. Heck, I think physical copies for Super Mario 3D All Stars are hard to find, and that's pretty deliberate scummery if you ask me.

Nintendo has never been very user-friendly, and are making it pretty clear that they're more interested in money right now. Come on Nintendo please try to make your fans happy... otherwise no one is going to buy your games.

They are a multinational corporation. I'm pretty sure money comes first and always has been coming first. But they generally put out good quality products to justify getting money from you. It's just that Nintendo Switch Online and Super Mario 3D All-Stars feels like they're exploiting people for keeping older games in some purgatory for years, opposing emulation efforts at whatever cost, and then giving themselves a pat in the back when they finally offer an older game for a (my opinion) hefty price for an older game but it's also timed.

I might be just a cynical overall-clad grouch, but ehh Mario Kart Tour's existence probably soured my whole mood on Nintendo as well as Nintendo's unjustified hostility to fan games and the modding scene.

2020 has been a very slow year for Nintendo, and them pulling stuff like this definitely isn't helping their case.

I'm partially upset that they discontinued the 3DS, but I guess it has been up for quite a long time now. RIP the DS family

As a Pro-Emu/Mod guy I completely agree with you. Now I don't exactly remember Nintendo's whole history but if everyone decides to scalp/pirate the hell out of this game come March, it'll just serve them right.

I still don't like the fact that you need to have subscription and access to the internet to access backcatalog again.

On a separate note do the NinSwitch Lite and the NinSwitch Pro Controller suffer from Drift?

Scalping the game is more immoral than piracy imho, I would be bothered if the game allowed for scalping because the customer loses. Pirating anything from Nintendo? Whatever. Nintendo has proven to not deserve respect from you especially since they're keen on letting underage players subvert gambling law and play slot machine with their Mario Kart Tour rubbish as well as making kids cry that they can't buy amiibo of their favorite Smash Bros. characters.

I use my Pro controller. I've had it for quite a while. It doesn't drift and I think other people can confirm my anecdote that it doesn't drift. You can try Pro Controller wired since it's cheaper than wireless, I think it won't drift. Unlike my own damn Joycons.

The pro controllers and switch lites will not drift, but you'd better bet the Joycons will. Must be some stupid hardware problem on those things...

I guess I could mention Origami King here. It's definitely not bad. That game is probably the only Nintendo highlight for 2020 :/
Tape has become one of my favorite video game characters of all time. No seriously.

Origami King's like the only new Mario game released this year. We got a ROM hack collection and some online game that won't be up forever; and some gimmick kart game that cost $90 a pop. Other than that? Some anniversary. 2020's overall, again, really slow despite being start of the decade. Probably has something to do with a particular microorganism that starts with c.

I have Origami King, but I haven't played it yet and I won't play it until I finish Luigi's Mansion 3.

I would've gotten Super Mario 3D All-Stars, but I already have SMG for Wii and have played SM64 on an emulator. Getting the game just for Sunshine doesn't seem like a good idea at this point, it costs $60, so why buy it for that price if I already have two of the games that are on it?

I've honestly kind of stopped playing on Nintendo consoles at all recently. I think all three consoles first party line-ups are a joke (maybe bar Rift Apart), the cool third party stuff is where its at
