huh, looks like we are.

then i wonder what could happen that might spike activity again...

although, i'm sure something will happen soon. i can't see this place dying, at least not yet.

I can honestly see it dying, mostly due to Discord. Everybody goes there to talk about general stuff nowadays, even hacking.

Yeah that's true, Discord took a place it never took before, including forums one.

this is Jamie, I don't know what my old account's pass is

just stopping by to say that I hate the Discord movement. literally I predicted the shitshow would happen 2 years ago and no one cared and defended discord.

then the cub shit happened and then people STILL defend it.

and before you say it's because "I'm still pissed it killed my derpboard" I haven't given a single fuck about that for at least a month.

Discord and modern forum software is way too "convenient" for the average user, we're mostly in this world becoming lovers of convenience over quality or such.

though, don't do what I did, or what Board2 does. don't keep it around if you don't see fit, but do provide an archive or public backup or whatever, but keep it around if you do want to and still have hope

convenience has a price. just look at social media platforms owned by companies, such as facebook or twitter. if they own your account and everything you do, you know you're not free.

i'm very much a person who tends to respond, not really a conversation starter.

I second that. I don't take active part in conversations, but rather reply occasionally to give my two cents on the topic at hand.

Exactly how I feel Heroic, I’m a more of a chimer than a starter. Although no subjects here can really relate to me because I don’t understand much.

But that’s something for another thread...

if I had a better feeling about this place rather than be forced off it by people who can't stand me (for good fucking reason)I would have been here a lot longer and probably tried to do something

that said - I cause a bunch of shit and drama even now so I'm probably better gone tbh

back to my point, convenience does come at a price indeed. a price bigger than a rare Fumo plushie with a worse outcome :(

and the fact Discord abuses its monopoly with the cool kids and yet they still defend them reminds me of Microsoft fanboys

hmm... if forums are going outdated, and discord is too company-ish, then maybe we need to find a new chatting service.

i suggest Google Classroom. yeah, that thing teachers do. this will totally work. trust me, i've been on the internet since at least this morning.

let's make a k64 classroom. it'll be great, we'll even be able to have arisotura be able to assign us, her little minions, work to do. i can't wait to learn

Yeah, in these kind of things it is the user that is the product. Discord makes what they want of their users, for example with recent ToS updates, and that's really scary as it continues.
They're just currently profiting of that situation, a kind of monopole, since they have literally their hands on entire communities.

At least, forums are not controlled by a sole business.

I wouldn't have a problem with Discord if it actually was professionally managed and well developed

It's a decent concept let down with absurdity in the staffer department and hipsterscript fappers

@iyenal totally agree. they're controlled by individuals who actually do it as a hobby or for the benefit of everyone most times

Slack slack slack! Professional, and at least they don't do money "from users". What do you wait to slack!

-looks like I am paid by Slack-

XD

speaking of which I actually turned a conversation around on the Raspberry Pi forums, and mentioned that if they were going to switch to Discourse that the site would crash on the Pi itself LOL

again, convenience and modernity seems to come at a high price of having to afford the latest shit and have everything sold of you unwillingly

i see we're still in serious-mode then

in that case, i should properly throw in my two cents. i don't think discord is that bad. the whole drama recently has reminded me of how people shit on youtube just because they want to shit on youtube. yeah, that staff member was literally insane, and they were evidently fired from discord staff.

as per their ToS stuff, i think that some of it is pretty silly. i don't like it either, but otherwise, i really enjoy discord. as thierry said, convenience has a price. it's a price no one wants to pay, i'm sure, but it's a price i'm okay with. old forums have a price, that price being convenience. that's also a price i'm okay with, since i really enjoy forums as well. (this place more-so)

discord is a platform that is supposed to cater to the modern world; cleaner interfaces that work better on modern computers, with extra tidbits (and scripts, yes) that optimally preform on higher power PCs. that's how the modern world online has evolved, especially in terms of video games, so i can understand discord (a chatting platform for gamers) follows down this path.

don't get me wrong, i still do love forums and older software like that, but discord just appeals to the modern world, myself included. if others don't like discord, that's fine, since there's other means of communication. is discord becoming more and more of a monopoly help keep older software like forums around? no, the opposite in fact. but that's just how we're progressing as a society, i guess. not too great, sure, but it's something i'm at least personally okay with.

i feel like i'm just repeating my point over and over now, so uh, long post end.

Unfortunately, everything is going on that way. We could say same for Windows 10 for example. That's the new way to do business, profit from the user directly.

that's what capitalism do

happy bday (although i already said that on discord)

speaking of discord

although the moderation team is.... questionable in some ways, i think that it's very convenient, and they don't often interfere with you unless you know, you send really illegal stuff like child porn, and that's understandable

i think the whole cub thing is pretty fucked up yeah but other than that i haven't had any issue so far with them. plus as RHG said, the cub guy got fired

it definitely does take up a lot of ram, but it shouldn't be a problem unless you're strictly an old computer user, which is admirable, but come on, shouldn't you have at least a decent computer for like work or something? i can't stand to work on slow computers that can barely run chrome (nowadays budget computers can run chrome, although to a point)

unrelated but i know it will be brought up, according to their ToS they do track user data, but they won't sell it to track you down, and only use it if it's a report and there's valid evidence that you might be doing something wrong

anyway, discord gang rise up, discord cool, boards and irc are cool too, even if boards and irc are coming to an end

to make this post even longer, without discord my friendship with a bunch of people would really either not progress as much or straight up even exist. hell my bro isaac we never really talked before discord, and a bunch of other people helped me to join too, and discord's cool new features were fun to twiddle around with if you had friends to mess around with
