the mario bros on a hunt for aliens, nice render. I wonder how many layers there were.

only nitpick I have is, the blood decal on the wall in the back. it's not spreading at all to the adjacent wall when it looks like it should. I guess that was too hard (or outright impossible) to position?

Actually, I sprayed blood decal on there, but the game didn't render it as I liked it to be, (as it seems to ignore the lights and fog) and there's no easy way to remove it without removing the characters and props all together. I was going to add some blood on Mario and Luigi through post processing (and I made selection areas very easy by creating a screenshot where they're one solid color and creating a layer) though I thought it would be too much detail that would detract from eyeballs focusing on them, and besides, I want to make it seem they just entered nice and clean. Anyhow, I have a few screenshots as layers that is supposed to mimic light effects: one that has light from the top, light from the ground (light bounces), and light from outside and I messed around with the highlights, midtones, and shadows just because a balance of those three generally looks nice. I also tampered a bit with gradient maps and I've created a one that makes Mario and Luigi more reddish to mimic skin tone (again taking advantage of the easy selection so I can single out Mario and Luigi). I wanted to add a little bit of misty fog at the ground but I'm no expert on that yet.

I wanted the shadows to look better, but that would require the map to be fully dark, and the map has built in lights, which has messed up the soft-lamps rendering, and so I had to resort to working with .jpg screenshots rather than the clean .pngs (though again, those .pngs don't take account into the nice depth of field effects) so maybe the image quality was impacted a bit, but not a game killer for me.

If you want a version with the blood on Mario and Luigi, though, I'll be pleased to make one.

All that carrying those hammers did wonders to their upper body strength.

it's really well done and hell, very precise. IMO the shadows look just fine, the ground shadows are a neat effect that makes the the whole thing more worthwhile to stare at.

I hope you'll post more of your GMod screenies on here, it's nearing professional level stuff.

If you play Gmod and are interested in making composite screenshots, look no further than this guide. I certainly borrowed some techniques from there.

I do have more Gmod screenies

though composition screenshots are actually a relatively new technique I'm doing.

this is the other screenshot that uses it

did rosalina just make a clay mario?

He's supposed to be Metal Mario, but the metal doesn't render properly thanks to some weird material properties (as well as metal not being responsive to light sources, as it's consistently lit on its own).

these all look super good! i'm surprised i haven't visited this thread before (or at least remember visiting this thread) because these all look super good! a lot of the single-character renders look very professional!

in the last "screenshot" you posted, mario's right foot looks like it's pointed at the side though. if it were turned about -90 degrees it would look more natural, but other than that, that's pretty much my only criticism. again, seriously, nice work!

I made it pointing that way just to emphasize solid, confident footing rather than relaxed one, similar to how the feet are splayed here (I think it's actually more splayed in the official render than in the Gmod pic) and here and here. It's not often I have feet at that angle though, I generally keep feet less angled.

Thanks for the praise though. The first few artwork, however, I think can use a lot of improvement, as my inking, proportioning, coloring, and figure posing skills have improved since then.

that's some girly bike right there. apocalypse survivors can't be choosers, I guess.

it's nice, though it lacks a feel of movement.. the only way I can think of would be to use the de-zoom of the camera.

I'm not that great with adding motion in pictures. The method I'm using doesn't make use of Depth of Field either, and I tried inputting a layer of blurriness but it messed with the colors.

So you've probably seen the image in the post layout first, but this is like an extract from an overall piece I'm working on (and that I *hope* to finish, unlike the other art I haven't touched in forever).

Full size version

and this would be the full WIP picture in question

in my opinion, this one doesn't fit the layout as well as the previous. the lines appear somewhat too thick in front of the marioes, and the fully opaque black doesn't quite make the cut.

it's up to opinion so I don't know about you, but I'd advise to make it slightly smaller and maybe less opaque.

edit: on second thought, if you don't feel like shrinking it I guess making the black less opaque (rather than the whole thing) would suffice.

Err, actually, the line might be thick, but probably because it's too big.

As for opaqueness, the previous art WAS opaque too.

anyhow, I darkened the image and shrank it a bit.

you can also compare the line art between the two. I think there's an improvement. :)

there's definitely improvement, but I quite like the thin lines like your previous one had. it's pleasant to look at, and fits with the marioes. I guess it's just my nit-picker nature when it comes to this.

anyhow, it's fine now you shrunk it. only problem, the image in your above post died as a result.

Huh, I still displayed for me. I must've deleted the wrong one because I wanted to keep the full-size one.

I do hope I can find a way to draw with thinner lines. My approach would be to draw with thick lines and simply shrink the image so it translates to some nice, smooth, thin lines.

boop

I like to think I've improved since then, yes.

The gun looks a little big but it does look pretty good! Although I wonder how Cappy would react going through someone and killing them.

Also, happy birthday.

Yeah the gun's big (though Mario's hands are big and I had to fit the gun on there and try to make it look proportional), might need to readjust the proportions eventually. I think hands actually take up more space on the gun than I imagined.

But my idea is that Cappy is a bullet that's faster and travels farther. He still lets Mario controls people when he hits 'em, but it's far more deadly than a hat throw.
