Hello! I've been working on a 30-star (or so) SM64DS hack for a few days, and I finally have something to show!

Yoshi and the Bob-omb War
(Formerly known as: Yoshi vs. Black Bob-ombs)

[image].[image]
=====
[image].[image].[image]

Black Bob-ombs and Pink Bob-ombs have resumed fighting. The conflict has grown close to the Mushroom Kingdom, with the Black Bob-ombs (aided by Bowser's troops) winning. Princess Peach has decided to take action, sending Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi out to gather stars in the war-town worlds, and looking to end the war by defeating their leader, King Bob-omb. You play Yoshi's story.

World 1 - Whomp's Fortress (Finished)
World 2 - Shifting Sand Land (Finished)
World 3 - Bob-omb Battlefield (10%)

Secret 1 - Secret Aquarium (Finished)
Secret 2 - Princess's Secret Slide (Finished, not Final)
Secret 3 - Red Coins in the Sky [formerly ? switch] (Finished?)
Secret 4 - ????????????
Secret 5 - ????????????
Secret 6 - ????????????
???????? - (Planning)

Peach's Castle (Mostly done)
Story (80% done)
Text (What's there is done)

Old Demo
Contains the 8 stars of Whomp's Fortress.

New Demo
Contains two main courses and two secret stars, 18 total.

Current issues:
-How does an NPC's parameter translate to their text ID? I have no idea.
-I don't know what worlds to use for the secrets.
-Yoshi can't enter 12-star doors until the first key is obtained, and 30-star doors until the second key. It's kind of a big issue, mainly because I don't plan on using the keys. Help?

Looks very nice! I like the story :)

The demo doesn't quite patch tho :P What version of the rom did you use?

...Not a clean one.

Turns out, my "unpatched" ROM had the header added from SM64DSe. This is required for editing, but it means the rom wasn't clean (I think? all I know is that when I made a new patch with a fresh ROM, the new patch was much larger)

Try now, I should have fixed it.

Yay it worked

It was quite fun to play and the red coins felt like Nintendo placed them

The conflict in Whomp's Fortress didn't feel very much like organised warfare, more like overall chaos and terror. I think that's ok, but you might consider having clearer lines of battle in later courses as the conflict escalates. Off course, the battle doesn't need to look completely realistic, that would be impossible without ASM hacking as the red Bob-ombs are just static and black Bob-ombs just go around in circles. With their original behaviors, it would be quite challenging to make them look like they are aware of each other.

But it definitely would be really cool tho if you could make the bombs actually kill each other >:)

Just a few thoughts, don't listen to me since you probably know what you're doing

BBB is going to be total chaos again, but I like the black side/pink side idea. More specifically, the starting area-ish could contain few hazards and some pink ones, but actually getting the stars will require venturing into the black bomb side. I don't think I can make them actually kill eachother, but that doesn't mean they can't still fight.

This is somehow better than every other hack I've played from here (other than ASM3D). That's extremely bad when this is just edited levels.

Let's see here...

-Starts on SSL
-Adds painting warp
-Moves starting position and changes background
-Moves enemy dangerously close to spawn

OK, let's practice adding some NPCs, since this course is going to have a bunch of them.

-Adds bob-omb buddy for text
-Gives it a text ID similar to the used Buddies, but different.
-Spits some random text I don't recognize
-Give it different text ID
-Hey this one works, it's Bowser's text
-I don't want it overlapping with Bowser, so I tweak it.
-it's Ukkiki's text. This I can use.
-Edit Ukkiki's text to something he would actually say
-Peach's castle crashes.
-...WHAT?
-I didn't even edit Peach's castle! Are you kidding?
-Change text again
-NOPE
-Well I guess the backups will come in handy. When was the last time I made one?
-...Before editing SSL... Great...

Some time later...

-Remakes SSL. And by remakes, I mean do the 60-second changes that I implemented last time. And added a bomb buddy again.
-Do the buddies' text IDs align with the toads' IDs? I'm removing most toads so I can go from there.
-OH MY GOSH THEY DO
-Gives the Buddy the text ID of a toad I don't plan on using (AF0, AF1, anf AF2 are used, so I'm doing AF3)
-Gives it fitting text
-WORKS!!!!

All that for these two screenshots...

EDIT: aaand the text has already changed. oh well.

EDIT 2: see the post below mine. Apparently this BBB didn't work as well as I thought.

Sounds like a pretty typical workflow to me :D

Now, the pink bomb side of SSL shouldn't have any real hazards- it's supposed to be safe- but I figured having the black bombs assault somehow wouldn't be a bad idea. Having them water-bomb the area was the obvious choice- they're known to use water bombs from BBB- but SM64DS uses object banks, so I can't just add any obj-

WATERBOMB
Requirements: None

...Nevermind then.

Anyhow, text editing crashed peach's castle a total of SIX TIMES. However, I've updated SM64DSe, and the problem seems to be fixed... for now.

SSL's first star is pretty close to done, and once it's done the rest shouldn't be as hard. Until the pyramid, that is.

EDIT: also, the new name: good/bad?

EDIT 2:

Guess what? apparently there was a bug lurking whereupon it would crash the game after saving post-star. WHICH I DIDN'T NOTICE SINCE THE STAR WAS INCOMPLETE AND I ONLY SAVE THE GAME (not save the rom- save the game in file a) ONCE A STAR IS DONE.

That was half an hour's worth of work down the drain and now I have to start SSL from scratch FOR THE THIRD TIME. I had backups, but this glitch inserted itself into the game a while ago so all the recent ones have it.

And the icing on the cake? Guess what caused it?

Make that SEVEN. There were four buddies that needed text. The first one worked without any issues. The second crashed six times, prompting me to switch editors, which let the 2nd/3rd/4th go free.

Yeah, apparently the first one didn't work "without any issues" as it had seemed.

...Just venting. I spent all day (when I didn't have things to do) trying to get SSL done after stalling so long, and then THIS HAPPENS.

SSL remaking didn't take as long as I thought, I guess since everything was figured out.

Anyhow, about 4 more stars done- 12 total.

[image]_[image]

How's this look?

EDIT:

I'd rather not triple post, so...

UPDATE:

SSL now has 5 stars done, so with the 100 coins largely ignored that means only 2 to go.

It was bothering me for a while that BoB was still course 1, and it still listed it as such, despite it being the final course (Whomp's fortress was actually the first course). Figured out how act selectors work, so not any longer! Course 1-Whomp's Fortress!

Ever wonder why the ancient pyramid didn't have any ghosts in it?

Not anymore.

EDIT 3: BIG UPDATE!

Second demo released!
Contains two main courses and two secrets, 18 stars total.

SSL is really well done, I especially liked the haunted pyramid. Too bad it lags significantly on R4 (i tried playing it with my DS lite, 3DS and "new" 3DS XL and there isn't a big difference). I think that's mainly because of Boos. Speaking of which, why don't you try to make Yoshi able to defeat Boos?

OK, I'll see what I can do about the lag.

Also if I had Yoshi able to defeat boos I'd have to balance adding 10-15 more blue coins into the 100 coin star since it's either blue coin or red coin so... I'll pass. Well, that and I kinda like the unbeatable boos.

If you have a softmodded 3DS, you can run this through a homebrew called "nds-bootstrap" that runs DS games from the SD Card.
The GUIs made for it (TWLoader and SRLoader) have the ability to force games to use DSi clock speed (133 MHz) as opposed to DS clock speed (67 MHz) and this gets rid of the lag in the pyramid (but disables the backlight when exiting sleep mode).
I think TWLoader may have the ability to force DSi clock speed on flashcarts as well.

Edit: Just played through Demo 2 fully. The Secret Aquarium needs coins. This level is almost unplayable if you don't know how to swim efficiently I think.

So I can blame my emulator for not noticing? And for deleting my save when I switched into DS mode to check? Got it. (I did notice unusually high frameskips in the pyramid, now I know to look for them).

EDIT: Will fix Secret Aquarium.

Imo it's much more fun and challenging to not have coins in the aquarium. SM64DS is too easy anyway.

Sorry I haven't made much progress in a while, year-long assessments have started so I'm going to be busy studying until the 10th.

But after that, my workload is effectively cut in half, so hopefully it should go quickly after that.

And my excuse for not doing anything this month before they started is... is... umm... uh... can I phone a friend?

On-topic: I'm thinking about keeping the coins gone from tSA, but changing the camera angle and moving the position of the last silver star, making it more obvious what needs to be done (less disorientating) and slightly extending the time limit (by moving the last silver star). Good idea/bad idea?

If you move the silver stars a little closer together, then I think it's fine to not have coins. My only issue is that I was down to 1 slice of pizza when I was collecting the star.

Yeah that's usual. I can usually manage two, but only because I've practiced.

EDIT: We have a problem. 12 and 30 star doors can be entered by every character, but only if they have been opened by Mario. That's a big issue, because it means Yoshi can't use them on his own. I was given a method of fixing it... which didn't work.

As far as I can tell, there are two methods of moving forward:

METHOD A: Keep everything the same. Assume a fix will be found; keep BoB at 12 stars and ??????? at 30 stars.
+It's how I planned the hack's structure all along
+Overall better method for pacing
-Reliant on someone else fixing something that may not happen in time.

METHOD B: Assume a fix will not be found, and work around it. BoB will only require 8 stars and ??????? will be merged with BoB Mission 7.
+It works
+The missions can be kept the same
-??????? is significantly earlier (14 stars vs. 30 stars)
-Game is potentially linear, with 6 of 14 stars required to be from BoB
-Less incentive for 30-star completion
-Highlights BoB at the expense of SSL. More specifically, nearly half of the player's time will be spent in BoB, when there are two other full worlds and many secrets.
-Warps can be added easily... right?

I'm leaning toward going with method B, because I know I can actually do it, but what do you think? It's really important for the hack's structure so I need as much input as possible.

EDIT 2:

That doesn't look good...

(note: I took a lot of damage because I was running all over trying to get a good picture)

With 1 out of 1 votes cast (myself), Method B is the winner!

Also, I'm aiming to have the whole thing done on or shortly after Fangame E3, which is possible now that my finals are over. That would be two weeks.

BoB still going to take some time, though.

ANY IDEAS FOR THE LAST THREE SECRETS? I'm drawing a blank please help...
