So, I joined the Robotics team and I don't have a laptop so my parents are going to buy me one. Which laptop do you all suggest?

I mainly would like a computer for coding the robot and school.

Thanks ahead of time.

Something with a quad core CPU. Anything from Gen 8 would be good.

If you have the money get a DELL XPS 13 or if you want a larger one the 15. These things are amazing. Design wise and tech wise. The 13 is percect for school/univ. The powerbrick is really small but you most likely don't even need it as the one with the FHD display has a battery duration of almost 10 hours. Don't expect to do any graphics intensive things on these tho as they do not a have a dedicated GPU (at least the 13. dunno about the 15)

IIRC they recently released a new revision with the new CPUs a few months ago.

Gen 8=Gen 7=Gen 6
There aren't microarchitectural modifications between them, they are just marketing "EE" ("Extreme Edition", but it's better "Emergency Edition"). There are also Ryzen that are pretty good and polyvalent (but Intel stay better for gaming).

so I bought a Gen 7, 2TBs worth of memory, and 6GB of ram. Thanks everyone that gave suggestions! I'll edit this post later once I found the page with all the specs on it.

You should upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB.

Yes, RAM power of 2 sizes are preferable to enhance CPU addresses assignation.

It's just for school. I'm not going to be editing videos on it or playing video games.

You need at least 8 GB or you'll be a laughing stock these days for some reason and with the way the internet is going about:blank will need 64GiB of RAM to work.

what, why would I be the laughing stock when most people at my school don't even know what RAM stands for. 6GB for school is good enough for since its only for making powerpoints, word, and programming for robotics.

Hm okay, then that should be fine then.

Yes it should more than good. And actually, RAM prices are very high, caused by the high demand of mobile devices flash.

I think 8gb memory is the minimum for today's games, open world games can easily use 16GB.
