You can call me mad all you like but I'm getting a small netbook to relive some things (not for IE6 by the way). It runs XP Home SP3, has 1 GB of RAM and an Intel Atom N270. I know, it's old and crap by today's standards but I quite fancied having something small running a really lightweight OS to carry around. |

back in ye olde days my mom salvaged quite a few laptops from her workplace, and those were my first really personal computers. could bring some back to life. they aren't exactly lightweight (they're big as fuck) but they sure feel retro.
I have two that are backed up, and atleast one that still works. the rest is lost. they're in the shithole tho, so... yea the latest ones ran Windows XP, older ones ran 2000 then I had that EeePC but I gave it to my sister. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

@grid: Any netbook/Atom specific distros you can think of? However I wouldn't want to tinker so much with this...
@staple: Nice. The Eee PC was another early netbook ^^ |

it was nice in its days (2011 or so), minus coming with the typical bloatware
it came with Windows 7, too eventually tried Windows 8, but it was an absolute fucking trainwreck, even slower than Win7 was. later, switched to a clean Win7/Ubuntu doubleboot on a SSD, and it was usable. reminder that a (good) SSD does wonders. but, capitalism and its pace of forced progress eventually caught up to it, and it was too slow to browse the HipsterWeb at usable speeds or even play Youtube videos. also, any new computer you buy these days will come with Windows 10 (or at best, 8, which still fucking sucks) and UEFI bullshit. be sure that the model you want can be unlocked as to install a decent OS of your choice. speaking of reliving old things, something I'm interested into would be building an ancient computer (20 years old or so) and running retro games/software on it. but eh, it'd mostly be a fancy toy. dunno. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Do netbooks even come with UEFI? Every netbook I ever used had BIOS but no a UEFI.
Maybe is because I went mostly for HP ones for light work or even some gaming but it glitched hard, even if what I wanted to run was PSO (and the small keys were a pain to deal with). My recommendation? - Look into swapping the hard drive to a 250GB at least, or go with a SSD. - Customize your XP to use the least amount of RAM possible. SP3 fresh out of the box can be made to use about 200MB of RAM on a cold start if you disable the stuff you don't need on the service list, disable visual effects (for that Windows 2000 experience) and start disabling features (who needs Windows Search or Outlook Express? Not me). ____________________ ≤!-- Am I doing this right? --≥ |

If theres a bios setting that has "boot type" or similar with options "UEFI" or "Legacy" then it supports the capitalist, monopolising shit known as UEFI. The only reason W7 wont work with UEFI is because MS didnt bother updating graphical communications for it... |

Posted by Luigi442wii I remember that my old Pentium IV had 2 boot types, "Enhanced" and "Legacy". Legacy mode was basically the same as the other but it it made the system report up to 256MB of RAM if you had more of it, disabled hyperthreading and other niceties that the BIOS allowed. ____________________ ≤!-- Am I doing this right? --≥ |

That sounds more like a compatibility layer for older OSes like Windows 9x, heh.
As for what Dilene suggested, I'm only using it for lightweight work, most of my stuff goes onto an external HDD anyway. Also Windows XP runs down SSDs pretty badly as far as I know due to not knowing how to handle them I already know to disable things that I don't need. ^^ @Staple: You should get out said old laptops and maybe get a picture And also, I'm getting the laptop hopefully on the 13th. |

they're in the shithole, so... yea
they were old Dell Latitude models (CPt, CPi, CPx, C600, C610, and D600 or so for the latest ones) I recall the CPx model being slightly superior over the CPt/CPi, it had a 3D-capable GPU ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Bumpty. Speaking of small laptop, have you gotten that Pandora mini-laptop, IceFairy? They’re planning to realease a successor called Pyra. Looks pretty cool for a modular PC. ____________________ Netplay is a language we all speak. Here’s my Discord. I had a weak Toshiba PC many years ago, and using it was a nightmare. Even the CPU weren't detected by CPU-Z. Now Toshiba stopped making portable computers. I understand why.
And many many years ago, I had a Windows NT PC, and a virus infected it. It corrupted the BIOS (yes before viruses were really ones) so it finished disassembled on my desk. Good life. ____________________ "I failed in some subjects in exam, but my friend passed in all. Now he is an engineer in Microsoft and I am the owner of Microsoft." -Bill Gates |
