Ever since I began working on Neo Mario Galaxy I was wondering what there is to the leftovers of the GoldenTurtle object from Super Mario Galaxy 1. You may not know what I'm talking about, but it's actually the golden shell required to open the golden treasure chest in Bigmouth Galaxy. Anyway, I have found out that all the functions and its virtual table are still in the game. The only thing that was removed is the creation method for the actual object. It wasn't difficult to recreate it, but the results are very impressive:

This is very impressive, nice job! It would be cool to see more things from SMG1 recreated into SMG2, and this is a wonderful example...
Is the golden chest also in SMG2, or was it removed completely from the game?

The golden chest is unused. It works as it should with the golden shell.

Yeah, I was able to fix the crash by allocating more space for the object. I didn't notice that shells require more space than in SMG1 (0xF0 > 0xE4).

And a recent discovery showed that the ASM patch is pointless. If a JetTurtle's obj_arg0 is set to 2 it will spawn the golden shell IF the model exists as well... So guys, if you want to use this, just add the model file from SMG1 and you're fine...

While that is true, the shells can't be used to open golden treasure chests...weird.

I have a two questions:

Does the gold shell operate differently? (Swimming Speed, Jump height?)
And does it function differently if you use JetTurtle's obj arg compared to the standalone version?

I think there is no difference in speed, acceleration and height. However, it will home at various enemies and obstacles just like the red shell. The most important feature is it can open locked golden chests.
Visually, the JetTurtle with Obj_arg0 = 2 and GoldenTurtle look the same, because they load the same model. However, the JetTurtle can't be used to open the locked chests.

I think the Golden Shell also appears in Beach Bowl Galaxy. Isn't there also a leftover Blue Shell or is that just the first game? Ot seems to be used by Cosmic Mario.

the classes themselves are actually bigger in SMG2 than in SMG1. It's not that shells need more space, it's that the classes it inherit are bigger.
