Yeah, I've seen game play of people just tearing this game apart with Cappy, and if love skipping chunks of levels in Mario Galaxy 2, as much as I do, I can tell i'm gonna love Cappy!

Overall I liked it. Still I think it is, at least a bit, overrated.

I didn't like the themes of the later kingdoms and there were no real surprises with them. They revealed 90% of the game in trailers. For me Mario games are good because Nintendo can surprise me with their surprising and creative worlds. This game didn't have many of them left sadly.

The music is a problem IMO as well. While the music in the first kingdoms is epic and perfect the tracks in the later kingdoms are not catchy at all. Beach music tracks were allways the ones that were the catchiest for me. The beach track in SMO is kinda... boring for example.

To me it kinda seemed like they rushed the game a bit at the end?

I think the game is good, like really good, easily one of the best games on the Switch, but I think a 97 on Metacritic, beating out GTA V by a single point, is a bit ridiculous. Now, it's two different types of games that appeal to two different audiences...but on a technical and content level, I don't see how it can compare at all.

Odyssey is good but I think it's a lil' overrated.

Just a lil' overrated.

I wouldn't say the game is a bit overrated. I would say it was overhyped with people getting "triggered" over things rather just analyzing them. As for the game being revealed in trailers, it's more like 60-70% and not 90% of the game was shown in trailers. The Lost and Snow Kingdoms, for example, we saw very little of.

Also I don't really understand how it's "ridiculous" that on Metacritic SMO beats GTAV by one point because they're different games. It's like saying because The Godfather is a different genre than The Matrix, it's ridiculous that The Godfather is considered better than The Matrix. I doubt many people who watched/played one of those movies/games has done the same with the other so I don't see how it's considered a "comparison". A better example would be if I say an ice cream cake is good and if someone who has never eaten an ice cream cake says like Finnish sausage is good, it's not a "ridiculous comparison of different foods" in any way as I've never eaten Finnish sausage and they've never eaten an ice cream cake.

Overall, I would say the game is a 9.4-9.7. Definitely not a 10 (BOTW also was like a 9.5 not 10 for me). There's some hilarious reviews like "this game is a 7/10 but I gave it a 0/10 to balance out the 10/10s" and "4/10 because I thought the Cap Kingdom was Mario had died and was trying to escape the afterlife".

That's why you don't watch anything from E3 or any other SMO related content.

Yeah I chose not to spoil my playthrough by watching every single trailer and I loved it. I'm sure if you'd already seen most of the game it wouldn't be as fun to explore though.

I stayed off youtube and other media for a week until I got SMO. But, I still got spoiled. I was on an Animal Crossing video and I was reading the comments on their opinion and boom right there the biggest spoil. But I still played the game. Get it.

I agree that the comparison of one-point differences in Metacritic averages between two completely different games with two different expectations and context is ridiculous like comparing bananas and roses.

Nevertheless, I find Odyssey a little overrated like I think it's a low 90. I wanted more bang in terms of fan service (but I did get Mario in a dress... I was thinking more about using more existing Mario characters rather than select like five of them, ignore the rest, and fart out original characters and enemies that'll be forgotten by the next game). I also found the design of levels, especially New Donk's, to be a disappointment. For a game that's advertised as "sandbox", the steep drops at the edges of the city ruin the immersive feel and makes you feel like you're restricted in a play pen. I do like the lack of episodes and linear progression in the levels, though, which is a first for a Mario game. But calling it a "sandbox" is a stretch. I still love the game, but it's not quite as excellent as Super Smash Bros. Wii U or GTA V. Odyssey controls really well, the jumping is fun to master, and of course, Mario is in a dress.

The soundtrack is all right. Though the Cascade Kingdom grates on me after a while. My unpopular opinion is that there should be MORE of a lack of soundtrack or at least a more ambient soundtrack like in Breath of the Wild since you'll be spending so much time in some worlds. Hearing Cascade Kingdom's fanfare on loop for 30 minutes should convince anyone that Breath of the Wild's choice for a ambient, minimalist soundtrack is a good design choice.

I see. Yeah, it would have been nice to have characters like Piantas and Rosalina in the game. It does suck that some new characters and enemies from past games and this game may never really be seen again. Strollin' Stus and Polari come to mind. I think some of the soundtrack could have sounded more grandiose and not just catchy. You know, like the Moon Kingdom should have had a theme similar to Space Junk Galaxy or Space Fantasy Athletics.

The soundtrack gets too much flack IMO. While for sure it isn't as good as that of Galaxy 1/2, it's still pretty great.

I think I'm one of the few people here who doesn't like Cascade Kingdom that much. It sounds okay the first time, but for the dozens of minutes you spend on it, it gets grating and I just want the music to shut the fuck up.

I do like New Donk City, Honeylune Ridge fire pit (they HAD to include a lava level, they had some boner and had to satisfy it), the final song prior to the credits (though not as good as Reach Out To the Truth from Persona 4 despite reminding me of it).

The Run, Jump, Throw 1 theme got really grating in that one area with the two sheep who are either suicidal or have a negative IQ (more like Artificial Unintelligence) due to them running off the level that I changed the music to the Bonneton theme in order to keep my sanity.

:P
