They could've done that with Mario and Luigi 4 but we got Luigi's psyche instead. Consider that an opportunity wasted.

So, let's warm this thread up again, shall we?

I was at gamescom on wednesday and was able to play Odyssey early. While it was exactly demo as at E3 stuff still feels different when you can play it yourself.

I mainly noticed 3 things I didn't particularly like or I am worried about for the final game:

The music: There seem to be a lot of areas with no music at all or with music/only sfx like in breath of the wild. And the music I heard was never as catchy as in previous games as in for example 3d world. IMO music was allways an essential part of the atmosphere of Mario games and it feels kinda strage not having the music supporting the gameplay that well as in previous games.

The controls: Yeah, I know, it takes a bit to get used to controls. But still, the controlls felt surprisingly unfamilliar. I can't even describe why they feel strange, but IMO they felt even harder to get used to as in SMG. Also the cap throwing thinq is a ton harder in handheld mode as you cannot really move the joycons unless you really want to swing the entire console arround. The controlls kinda feel as unfamillar as the ones from Sunshine. I don't quite get why they changed that much from the controlls from 3d world as these'd fit this game perfectly as well. Also not being able to run properly in a such big worlds is also kinda strange. To travel arround fast you'll end up rolling or long jumping across. Not sure if that feels very nice. I just hope I am totally wrong about this as I was only able to play in handheld mode and everything feels nice with a pro controller.

The moons: Everybody is excited for this game as it is comparable to SM64/Sunshine in it's open world style. The I really have the feeling from the demo that there is only one real mission per world/kingdom. All the side moons seem to be pretty radomly scattered arround the world and don't even seem fun to discover like the ones randomly and very obvoisly hidden in wooden boxes on the path to the main moon where the boss is. Other moons are also pretty often hidden behind challanges whcih are basically typical 3d linear levels. And I really doubt that they will change that in the final game as there didn't seem to be any more spots to hide a main mission. I just hope Nintendo'll suurprise us and put additional main missions in the game as in SM64/Sunshine anyways. Another option to tackle this'd be having a few more main worlds/kingdoms instead of having many main missions in one kingdom. I doubt that there will be that many kingdoms in the game tho. I kinda expect a count comparable to Sunshine?

Well, I guess this sounded really negative. Tho I still don't doubt that Odyssey will be a good game. Tho I somply doubt that the game will be able to stand the huge expectations a lot of people have for it. What do you think about this?

I think there are multiple main missions per kingdom, but you have to do them in order a la Sunshine/Galaxy. The small moons are kind of like the SM64 Stars or Sunshine Blue Coins as in you can do them in different orders.

Just wanted to put this out there, but that Forest Kingdom place (if I remember correctly, I think its local name is "Kogswold") looks a lot like Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors. The resemblance is uncanny.

I'm going to look forward to the lack of music.

If I had control over the sound settings, I'd turn the music off.

It's a different experience if anything.

So there's at least 11 Kingdoms now:

Mushroom, Metro, Sand, Wooded, Cap, Luncheon, Cascade, Seaside, Snow, Lake, and probably Tropical.

Only the Lake Kingdom we haven't seen. Nintendo decided to show what they referred to as "tropical islands" instead. ...Anc why is everyone so shocked Mario has nipples? What I find shocking is he has no navel and no chest and abdomen muscles.

Here is some leaked gameplay:

Edit: Let's keep this spoiler free.

Dunno if it's anything leaked. Nintendo had events shortly before the direct where some people were allowed to play and and alsp capture gameplay from the final game.

Finally! A real use for the spoiler tag!

Apologies for the uncovered spoilers. When you get used to openly talking to other people about the spoilers, you can forget that people outside those groups may not want to to read spoilers. :P

Back on top, here are more spoilers:

Reviewers' recently released footage of Bubblaine like the video above showed some cool new features. When you possess that purple octopus in the water sphere you can clean up lava like how you can clean up graffiti in Super Mario Sunshine. And yes, this is lava that looks the one from Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 and not the pink one in Mount Volbono. Also like in Super Mario Sunshine, there are Cappy-less levels akin to the FLUDD-less levels.

In other words, Super Mario Odyssey will literally be a blast.

To be honest, this game looks great (In My Opinion). I think it's about time Nintendo made another free roam game and there is no better console than the Switch.

it's not really free-roam

Nothing was leaked, Nintendo held a media event where you got 90 minutes with the game. I had the misfortune of being unavailable for the event.

Also, SMO is technically kinda free-roam. Is it as open as BOTW or GTA? Of course not. But it's more open than 64 and definitely more open than 3D World.

I was talking about Odyssey with a friend and saying it (and the Switch in general) is definitely overhyped, not saying that it isn't a bad game, though. It just feels like to me there is a lot of hype over it, though I tend to ignore the latest gaming news and games so maybe I'm just being cynical...

Hype doesn't hurt in the Nintendo world, especially after the Wii U days :P We'll see how it turns out to be, but for now it definitely looks good. Also remember the Switch is among the devices with the highest power/volume factor ever made.

As long as you don't have your expectations set too high Super Mario Odyssey will probably not be a disappointment for you.

Well, this is another topic, but people are still talking about Sticker Star today.

But yeah, you're right, there isn't a terrible pre-order culture with Nintendo as it is with Ubisoft and Nintendo is very straight-forward with showing off their games while other companies tend to rely on dishonest CG trailers and edited voice-overs on their gameplay.

Out of all the good things about Nintendo, this is one I never bothered to notice properly but definitely appreciate about them. I mean I don't like their business decisions - hence why I sort of refuse to buy a Switch (other than the fact no F-Zero NX will ever come out) - but they do make good decisions sometimes and actually being open about gameplay is a good thing, it shows they're being more honest than some devs.
