Running games from a folder in 2017

Since Dolphin 5.0-4950 you can easily run games from a folder. Really, no more fiddling.

Step 1:
Extract your image (ISO, WBFS, GCZ) with WIT. You can always use one of the scripts that are around nowadays, but honestly..

wit EXTRACT "file.iso" "destination/"

.. isn't that hard.

Step 2:
In Dolphin, open the Config pane and select the "Paths" tab. You will need to add your folder where your game is extracted. Conveniently, Dolphin uses wit's file structure.

When adding the folder, pay attention not to add the root of the extracted folder. You actually need to go inside the /DATA folder first, like so.

Step 3:
Close the dialog. Press refresh. Wait patiently. Your extracted game will appear in the game list. You may recognise an extracted game by its filesize (always 0.00B).

Games from a folder should run just like an image. They can even access save files and the game.ini system.

Thanks! This fixed my problem of Dolphin crashing. I can now finally test without WiiScrubber!

One problem: lag!

I know you can't fix this, I am just throwing it out there. It's very laggy...

Are you sure that this isn't just you?

Well, running with an ISO gives me 90-100% speed (unless streaming -_-)

Running from the files gives me 30-40% (when not streaming)

It didn't :/

Edit: You need to activate "Search subfolders" else it wont find it!

Edit 2: Well when I try to open it it's just a blackscreen

This did not happen to me. I used a weird version of wit to extract my game. I ran it using "wit.exe " instead of "wit ". I gave him the version of wit that comes with Dolphiilution. That's probably not the one I used though.

Welp

It's always best to use the latest version of wit. Download it here: https://wit.wiimm.de/download.html

I know it's not that hard, the main purpose I made it was for people who were completely new to hacking Wii/GameCube games. In fact, wit was made for people to make scripts off of if you read the website. Either way, I appreciate you leaving a link to my post. I am going to release an update soon for all the programs and even add some new ones, so it'll be a bit easier overall.

@Anthe What is the need for this feature? Aren't ISOs smaller in size?

Although I am banned, I am still willing to help. :)

This is important because it lets you add files to the game, and run it with new models, galaxies, etc. ISOs are actually larger in size, as they are just compressed files (SMG2, as I recall, would be about 3.4GB) PLUS trash data (placeholder, so it fills up the entire disc). The ISO size will always be 4.2. This is also how compressing works in Dolphin. It deletes the trash data but keeps the code.

Hope I helped!
:D

@shibboleet lol

(Woah, is that a post before I had my layout? 0.0)

That makes a lot more sense, I always wondered why .isos were always the same size.
I tried doing things this way but Dolphin couldn't find it. Well, it did, but it wouldn't play. Just a black screen.

Ahhhh, okay. TheSunCat didn't specifically ask me to post it in there, though. :P

True.

@Anthe, I can't find the Dolphin version you were using... Was it deleted?

Are the download links not showing up for you or something?
Direct links are
Windows: https://dl.dolphin-emu.org/builds/dolphin-master-5.0-4950-x64.7z
Mac: https://dl.dolphin-emu.org/builds/dolphin-master-5.0-4950.dmg

• Nadia: makes her BQFX file an AJ7
• SuperHackio: questions what that is
<~StapleButter> the AJ7 is an automatic rifle model based on the well-known AK47

Huh. I got this to work on a later version of Dolphin, so I don't really need the same version... Unless it has a feature that could be useful?

Thanks for the links either way. :)
