after a long series of garbled characters which you had to decipher, now recent captchas no longer do that they outright insult your intelligence instead "to prove you aren't a spammer, put the square peg in the square hole!" It also works the other way around; robots can identify themselves as humans also:
The reason we use it on DSHack.org is not because we want to stop spam (the board itself is already secure enough without Captcha), it's to prevent automated scripts that allow you to make unlimited amount of accounts in a few seconds. |

Limiting accounts per IP is good enough for that, unless someone is competent enough to automatically change proxies per rereg.
