One of the dumbest News Articles I've read in ages, this guys sound like he either works for Microsoft, or he was paid to write this. It sounds stupid, basically saying "Upgrade to Windows 10, fuck anyone who uses Windows 7, there's nothing you can do about it, Microsoft controlling your PC is the new normal, get used to it." I cringed while reading this...

Geez, that was painful to read...

...I still think that if people just thought for themselves and didn't follow the "change is inevitable, there's no use fighting progress" train of thought (if that), Windows 10 wouldn't stand a chance ._____.

Question...does anyone else here think that Windows 10 had a shot at being actually good during the 98xx builds, or is that just me?

I remember liking the first preview they released.

being a sequel of Windows 8, I'd never have liked it, because Windows 8 was a trainwreck.

Windows 7 is the last good Windows. stick to it or use Linux.

reminds me of mom "you have to follow progress even if it's crap". yeah, no.

So wait, even if the preview was literally 7 on a faster version of 8's kernel with tiles available the way Desktop Gadgets used to be (alongside the gadgets, that is), you'd still be dissatisfied with it? .___.

Going by out-of-the-box first impression, I agree completely. However, I'd argue that Windows 8.x is the last "good" Windows, even if it was poorly designed, as all it takes is Classic Shell and OldNewExplorer to cover the broad strokes of turning it into fast, ugly Windows 7...and one can go a lot further than just that.

Yeah, I can relate to that kind of situation :/

Well I use Windows 10, the stock ISO build was terrible IMHO, start menu had a 1 ~ 3 second opening lag and the search function did not work at all.
Window positions were really awkward too some being placed out of the visible window area meaning none of the controls were usable!

Windows 10 Anniversary update works well for me, RAM usage is pretty good and nothing seems up so far, emulator and game compatibility is faultless so far.

I feel like their 'Project Neon' is just a rip off Apple again, music app looks just like iTunes had a baby with Android's Material UX, the login screen also looks just like Mac OSX...

Oh technology is great.

In my own opinion, Windows 7 is the only good Windows version.

Windows 10 did add a few good things, the best being copy/paste shortcuts in the CMD, the multiple desktops they finally got (Linux got it decades ago already!), and the Linux Subsystem (which oddly enough is still in Beta after over a year now).
Sadly, those are also the only good things Windows 10 has, what Windows 7 doesn't have.

Fast startup is pretty nice. Keeping a page file greatly improves boot times.

I regret going from 7 to 10. As ironic as that may sound, it is true.

Windows 10 Creators Update can block Win32 apps if they’re not from the Store

Oh, goodie, Microsoft is imposing Mac-like restrictions in an attempt to make people use the store. I wonder if this says something about the future of Windows?

The funny thing about the Windows Store and Mac App Store is, they're both attempts to copy the Software Repository system Linux already had for decades, and yet they fail to get the main point of having such a system.

On Linux, you use such a system to quickly install an app and its dependencies, without the need to use a web browser first, and it updates everything.
On Windows and macOS, it basically does the same thing, but with lots of additional bloat, lots of trial/paid apps, and without all of the system stuff (kernel updates, driver updates, etc.).

So how much longer until they disable the option to allow non-store apps? ._:-.

Yeah, I think the only real way to match the convenience of Linux package managers would be via a command line utility or a simplistic GUI for each action (Install package, update everything, etc.). And, the latter wouldn't work for what seems to be their new(?) target demographic, people that have to have their hand held when using it and just want it to work, like what Apple goes for with iOS. And even with the GUI, it still wouldn't be as useful since, like you said, Windows Store just doesn't cover nearly as large of a scope of software in terms of system related things.

I can't say I'm too upset, though, since the more Microsoft makes it's OS less appealing to the programmer / tech savvy type of person, the more attention goes to making programs cross platform.

this also encourages a culture of idiocy and thus bad security. remember, security also relies on the users.

Cross platform between Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 IoT, Windows 10 HoloGlass, and Xbox One, you mean?

Also, even though you didn't mention it, don't bother saying that Microsoft aims at having a single GUI for a single purpose, Windows 10 has System Settings, and Control Panel.
As the end user, you'll probably only need the System Settings, but if you're a heavy PC user, you'll need both.

I know something like that is possible with the UWP, but I mean cross platform as in non Windows platforms like Linux.

Coming soon: Ads injected into Win32 Apps, without letting the developers know...
Every next step Microsoft is taking is a concerning one, by the looks of it.
