So I am aware that people on this site are mostly rom hackers. However I myself do not rom hack. Instead I create games from scratch. So I want to hear your opinions on Game engines. The Engine I use for developing my games is Unity 5. It's a great engine in my opinion. What do you prefer and why? |

Posted by FinalShroom81 So, is that from scratch, or using Unity? Can't be both... I use Unity myself, my last time I used it was here: Unity allows you to create any game very easily for any platform, that's why I love this engine so much. However, I've lately become more interested to learn to make games from scratch (so C++, and either OpenGL or SFML, although Vulkan looks promising). |

How did you use unity to make 3ds homebrew?

I don't know if it's a game engine, but I use Game Maker Pro 8.0. I'm pretty sure it is
I like it because... I don't really know, actually. I just like it ____________________ Sorry for the maintenance -- we'll be back soon! |

Posted by Yami When I say "from scratch" I mean that in terms of an empty project in Unity. Creating games from absolute scratch is cool but takes much more time. If I were to do something like that I would probably make my own game engine. |

Unreal is the best of the engines in my opinion, and godot is pretty cool too, but then again im awful at using engines and always tend to fair better when starting from absolutley nothing. Im not sure why that is exactly, but engines just dont click with me as easily as making it from nothing does. ____________________ Hacking LM and trying to not suck. Weeeeeeee. |

Posted by FinalShroom81 Pygame is a good place to start, it offers a nice wrapper for sdl and such in python, though sometimes has performance issues. This is usually due to things related with event loops though, sdl can have the same issue but it can be greatly reduced by using wait event timeout and pygame probably has something similar. I dont know very much about sfml because I haven't used it, I usually just stick with opengl (and if I ever learn it, vulkan may be nice) or SDL. Both are really nice and work fairly well. ____________________ Hacking LM and trying to not suck. Weeeeeeee. |

Posted by Yami It took about 5 seconds to type in "unity 3ds" and find my answer lol. That's really cool though! ____________________ No, not doing SM64DS hacking, just here for the waffles. |

it's interesting that you can actually develop for the 3DS without being a company. it likely still includes the steps of "throw a few hundred dollars at Nintendo" and "sign a NDA", though.
I wonder if Unity 3DS would be usable in homebrew at all. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Unity for 3DS spits out Dev CCI and CIA files by default, so you'll need to convert them to Retail CIA first.
Luckily, this is easy, once you get the RSF file down. |
