the sad part is that there are many people going Apple because they just want something that works, and the non-Apple choices fail to provide that

which is also based on misguided beliefs like "mac has no crashes or viruses"

or iPhones that work nicely... until the next model is released

Also really curious to see what happens at the iPhone 7 release...like the response to no earbuds and the other stuff. Be pretty interesting too see how many people have already been transformed into apple sheeps.

I'm cynically-minded, but I think the headphone jack is going to have little impact on sales. It'll have to be spectacularly terrible decision after spectacularly terrible decision, even for Apple, until a good portion of the Apple fanbase notices. Otherwise, they'll just rationalize and agree with Apple and be swayed by its thin "explanations" and the sales will be a success. Maybe there'll be more skepticism, but I don't think headphone jack removal is on the same level as the whole DRM fiasco the Xbox One experienced. But again, I don't follow Apple or its fanbase.

I also think some people on the fence are persuaded because Apple just looks nice and it's popular. I got their products believing that I'm getting something quality, but I got frustrated and I realized alternatives actually do exist and are less restricted. I think my dad was the same. He was really pissed off at Apple that he refuses to buy any Apple products. He's so serious about that.

heh.

I have seen atleast two persons owning an iPhone 4s and getting sick of it. My uncle had one, broken middle button. A friend had one, broken power button or whatever it was (and crapoed battery), and in the end he sold it and got a Nexus.

my family isn't too Apple-fan tho. my sister has an iPod that's barely even used. dad has an iPad that's collecting dust alongside all the other tablets and toys he got.

someone should dig into iOS and find evidence of planned obsolescence implemented in software. would be a fun ride.

and spread it as much as possible-- Apple will likely respond with a C&D. but if you spread things right, noone can control the internet.

What about those products made them sick of it? Because I would honestly be sick of any products that have broken buttons. Did they attempt to repair it?

I also think my dad knows what his opinions are based on because he's the type of guy who is capable of looking into systems and repairing them. He's an experienced solderer and he knows how computers work (his job involves big printer maintenance). So I imagine his disdain when he worked with Apple products. Our family doesn't actually own them aside from some iPods, but my Dad probably knows how difficult it is to repair Apple products. Moreso with smartphones, since those are increasingly important products.

I'm concerned that it took us a while to grow frustrated with Apple, but Apple doesn't really care because it'll have a fresh new batch of people that tries Apple products and likes them at first. And once they get tired of them, more will just move in. And some that become fans stay fans.

Yeah, StapleButter, we personally know how my Dad's like, right? But I got to appreciate him for that, someone who's experienced frustration with Apple. My extent of my frustration was just iPods and iTunes.

they didn't attempt afaik, but they were just sick of the iPhone and crap like "battery is crapoed but you can't replace it lol".

I don't own an iPhone, but my phone also got a crapoed button. I eventually replaced it. you can find spare parts on eBay for example, and if you're lucky like I was, the repair requires no soldering. just a good set of precision screwdrivers to deal with the funky screws used in smartphones (which can also be found on eBay at cheap prices).

I can understand the frustration from trying to repair Apple crap. they don't want you to repair it, they want you to be a good consumer sheep and buy a new one. hell, pretty sure their repairmen don't repair, they just replace all the shit that can be replaced or something simple. or tell you to buy a new one because it's obsolete.

I wonder if Macs have the same stupid design, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I wonder how restrictive they are. I replaced the stock fan in my PC recently, but I don't know if I can do the same if the PC I got was a Mac...

But that's off topic... sort of. I just hope Apple doesn't set a new precedent here. As said by the OP, it seems like they already did by making batteries non-replaceable. It reminds me of how PCs are designed to not have parts be easily replaced.

"how PCs are designed to not have parts be easily replaced."

must be talking of laptops.

desktops PCs are built to be replaceable and expandable at will. but even then, you get shit like new CPU sockets that require a complete upgrade.

There's also this whole thing where I'm using an AMD Fx processor and I might be better off with an i7, but it seems advisable to rebuild it from the ground up. I don't know why, so I listen to you, my brother, and my father.

Well I think it"s more about a mix of a Hardware and Software in conjunction planned obsolescence.

Well some parts are replaceable at least (but it can be some tricky to replace), I think that if you see Apple isn"t really interested too much in PC market as with mobile market, since they can make that kind of strategy rentable and also PC market don"t generate much earnings in comparision of mobile market so that explain why Apple don"t make too much changes in them. Also as today I think that it would be even better to buy a normal PC and install Mac OS in it than buy a Mac computer, it will be easier to change and repalce their parts if needed and get the same or even newer CPU, and more; for a minor price.

I liked OS X before they introduced their first step to port Mobile features to the PC, which in their case was the App Store.
Since then, they not only kept fucking up OS X (and now macOS), they also started to fuck up their Hardware.

I mean, removing the DVD Drive? Removing the ability to Upgrade RAM on an iMac? Force Touch Track Pads? What the fuck?!

Some Apple fans compare removing the DVD drive to a step into removing dated hardware (also the same rationalization by some for removing the headphone jack). Some Apple fans say if it weren't for Apple, we'd still be using floppy disk drives.

While I agree that a PC with a Mac OS would be superior to an Apple PC, what clear advantages does iOS have? Again, I believe it has a slightly more friendly programming environment than Windows and according to StapleButter, is also has good hiDPI management compared to the other PC OSes though I don't know how useful that is or if it's even relevant. But anything else? I mean, it looks nice and I admit that it's a little cool to customize aspects of the UI like highlight color...

laughable.

I don't see how compact discs are 'dated' hardware. besides, I much prefer owning a physical copy of data and have it under my control, rather than just owning a 'right' to access something that sits on a corporate-controlled cloud server.

Compact discs are slowly getting phased out, though. I don't remember the last time I bought something that came in a CD that wasn't a console game, lol. I think it's fine that the music and games are digital, just as long as you have control over those files. Steam handles digital games VERY well and is pretty consumer-friendly (in my opinion; formed it after it actually enticed Russia, the infamous land of pirates, to be customers). But still, at least having the option for a disc drive is nice. I don't have a disc drive and I'm doing a bit well without it, but that's because I needed to save some money. I get by via cracks, unfortunately.

I mean CD as in the general thing, incl. DVD and Blu-ray.

It seems like Apple did influence the decline of the floppy disk drive (but they didn't ditch floppy drive support, they only removed the drive and made USB-connected floppy drives more popular), but I doubt it killed it. I read the Wikipedia article and it seems like fans are giving Apple way too much credit for killing the floppy disk. It appears to me that it phased out as USB flash drives and BIOS boot, which I don't think are Apple's inventions (to be fair, iMac probably popularized USB).

If the analogy between ditching CD drives and floppy disks is flawed, would be nice explaining.

as a reply to Yami: (post is made only of quotes, can't be quoted)

the goal is uniformizing everybody and everything. sheep that are all identical are easier to deal with for the capitalist system, than people who are all different.

Just like school. :V

It only works if companies are persuaded to follow Apple, though. Apple was, I think, responsible for a lot of changes that shouldn't have happened, like removing the smartphone battery's ability to be replaced easily.

Still, funny how in terms of Apple, the design of the technology is anything but uniform and standard.

their design goals aim at making things nonrepairable -> planned obsolescence.

And having flexibility usually means a little more effort on understanding your system. Clearly, some consumers don't want to deal with that MAJOR headache. ;P

the technology shitsplosion makes modern humans lazy. why bother cooking food if you can have a robot doing it for you? and so on.

and this is how humans went from hunting mammoths with sticks and stones, to relying on a corporate-controlled smart cooking bot to make their food. guess which one is glorious and which one isn't.
