Are there actually any sprites that get rendered in front of Mario and don't have any significance?

you could probably get it going with some reverse-engineering though. dunno about NSMB2, but for NSMBDS I could probably whip it up quickly as long as no collision is involved.

You mean a sprite that would be rendered as if it was on layer 0? As far as I know, NSMB2 doesn't have any sprites that act that way
