This thread is for discussing the future of smartphones. It doesn't look quite good right now.

Take a look at a popular example. We have the Samsung Galaxy S5, with a replaceable battery, SD card slot, and is dust and water resistant. Then, we have this S6 "upgrade", which removes the replaceable battery, the SD card slot, is no longer IP67 certified for being dust and water resistant. And this, like the following examples, is targeted at technosheep. Although the news media always focus overly on the negative to give them a wider audience which gives them more money, the advertisement portion of the news media (telling us what's new) always gloats about how good the new stuff is, in this example, the S6. They say "OMG! It's a few millimeters thinner (like who cares, the case that holds the phone is going to make it thick enough so that we can actually hold it, thin is good to an extent but when it gets too thin, it is way too slippery) and has a much faster processor (like not really), It has a freaking 1 million more pixels than the S5 (which I can't even notice). And still, some people have fallen for this silly advertisement and have upgraded their S5 to the S6.

You might say, well, that Samsung regained its audience with the arrival of the S7. They put back some of the features (waterproof/dustproof/SD card slot). You might notice something big is missing here, though. Replaceable battery. Nowadays, almost phones have decided to copy silly Apple and making the batteries nonreplacable so that we all have to switch our phones when the battery gets bad. Only one major brand is left, LG, but they are quite stupid too. But anyway, you might say the S7 is ok. I agree, but if the future is just taking away features and adding back the features we are getting nowhere and producing a hell ton of waste, contributing to global warming. At this point, it would be like OMG just get a phone that has a replaceable battery so it can last you like 10 years or something! But at least the S7 had a much larger battery (even larger on the S7 Edge) and also could do 720p 240fps slomo (but nice, they skipped 1080p 120fps). It would be an ok upgrade for someone with a S6, but to be honest, not much different besides the much better battery life.

That's one example. Samsung tried to recover themselves from the S6 disaster, and it was half successful. Just recently, Samsung has unveiled the all-new Note 7 (they skipped the Note 6 to get in sync with the Galaxy series) but what does it offer? The same exact internal specs as the S7 series, a 0.2 inch bigger screen, and then guess what? Something stupid. The battery is only 3500 maH, which is smaller than the S7 Edge while they clearly had more space to work with (the phone is slightly bigger). Clearly idiotic. Do you think people will actually buy the Note 7 when it offers the same as the S7 Edge and its battery is worse, and is more expensive (since it just launched)? Clearly not. I was hoping that Samsung actually became smarter and decided to go with the newer Snapdragon 821 processor and a 4000 maH battery. But no, they didn't. I know about the rumors that it was supposed to have 6 GB RAM, but that doesn't matter to me, no one needs that much. 4 GB RAM is already quite enough for the most avid user, and if Android became more efficient one day, it would only need the same amount of RAM as an iPhone (2 GB RAM or at most, 3), as more RAM actually means faster battery draining.

Well, that's Samsung. Anywhere you can find these examples. LG is one of my favorite smartphone brands. They decided to keep the replaceable battery and SD card trend throughout while others gave up and tried to make us cycle faster through our phones to wring more money out of us. LG G4 was a particularly good phone (except for the battery, but hey, its replaceable), especially the camera. I actually took over 30 GB of HQ skiing footage in the past winter, all of the videos being in 1080p60 or 4K30. It is amazing how the footage never "lags", if you know what I mean. Take some HQ footage from a Samsung S7 and you'll see it has frame drops and all of that. But this is for another story. LG also became idiotic. So we see the "successor" the V10, right? It spans two screens, and is also much larger. But what did they do? The battery stayed the same size, while they clearly had more space to work with. Dumb. Two screens consume much more battery, and the G4 already had a not so decent battery life. Plus, the same internal specs, except for the extra GB of RAM, lowers the battery life even more. Quite dumb, right? And now we see the G5. What did they do? They made the battery smaller, now, and the screen smaller as well. They also got rid of the slo-mo camera function. You think this is worth an upgrade? Maybe it has a slightly faster processor and an extra GB of RAM, but no. Another upgrade for the technosheeps. The only reason why I'm using a temporary Fire Phone is because I don't want to waste any more of my money on phones until I see something actually worthwhile, which will be hard. Hopefully LG V11 will be good, with a good camera and a bigger battery.

And for those Apple fans, you might think OMG Apple is awesome, but, in truth, they too, are getting stupid. Removing the headphone jack just to slice off a few millimeters of depth? It's already thin enough, we don't need it used as a knife. Seriously. Also, in doing that, they will most likely force you to by a Bluetooth headset only compatible with iPhone, and of course, more money you have to spend, and guess what, something else to remember and something else to charge every single night. Seems like an inconvenience, at least to me, unless you don't like being organized and get your headphones tangled up all the time. And also, have you seen how the newer iPhones have a smaller battery? Some rumors say that making it thinner will allow more space for a bigger battery, but I think not. The iPhone 6s Plus is only 2700 some maH while the 6 Plus is 2900 some maH. The same can be applied to the smaller variant. So I guess they just want to make it thinner. Ugh. Making it more slippery. Also nice job for making the dumb "iPhone 7 Pro". You want people to pay an extra 100$ right? And another extra because you are doubling all the storage quantities? Also nice job for copying the LG G5 for the double camera.

As you can see, the future of smartphones is, bleh. Don't be a technosheep and listen to those biased reviews. Those reviews, they get money for doing them. So obviously, they must make it sound good. But you, the user, must dive in deep into the specs and the actual hardware to make good, informed decisions. And hopefully, these manufacturers get a brain someday.

Well, IMO the user has the choice. There will always be people that want to buy something, even if it's worthless. As for the LG brand of phones, G3's battery life was 16% lower than that of the G4's.

Now, regarding iPhones, Apple makes people believe that buying something from them is classy. I can see why Apple wants to remove the headphone jack but I also think that the world isn't ready for this drastic change. Most of our appliances still are wired. I like Bluetooth but not to the extent of me purchasing everything wireless. Only time will tell if it is successful or not. As for me, I'm definitely not buying the iPhone 7. I still use lots of wires and I don't want to buy a damn extension either just to play my wired headphones.

I think they just want you to use Bluetooth headphones, which is not bad for Phone Calls, but horrible for music.
On my current Phone, I use both (wired earphones, and Bluetooth headset), but when listening to music, wired definitely wins over Bluetooth.

I think this depends on the manufacturer.
At least with Android anyway, if you're with Apple, then bad for you :P

I also stopped following Samsung because they are starting to do said annoying stuff(no SD card, etc)

I'm placing my bet that Huawei will always stay good as it is now (I'm looking to get a P8 to replace my nexus 4)

Bluetooth headphones? I have AYL 4.0 bluetooth pair, and the sound quality is very good IMO.

Apple has been stupid a long, long time ago. Currently, Apple does everything it can do make me hate their products, I swear. Proprietary bullcrap mostly, especially with file management and how their wire jacks/plugs/whatever are designed. Finally, Apple products make you look like an asshole to me, idk. When I see their products, like their phone, their design is pearly and shiny, but they just conceal their true, ugly forms.

As for earbuds, getting rid of the headphone jack sounds like a major pain in the ass. I own cheap earbuds, but that's because the wires seem to wear quickly whenever I touch them and for everyone else, they last forever. I also hate Apple's earbuds, they're terrible at blocking noise so other people won't hear it, and they don't fit that nicely in your ears.

Welp, maybe you aren't an audiophile or have used actual good headphones before, because Bluetooth headphones just sound dull and metallic compared to some wired headphones. This explains it better: http://lifehacker.com/does-bluetooth-audio-still-suck-1505063323

Oh wow, a phone brand that still has the SD card (there is LG too, but now, this is getting to be a rarity). The P8 is a pretty solid phone with it. The only thing is that Huawei phone's battery sucks. They made the Nexus 6P actually, and despite it being bigger and having a bigger battery than the 5X, a legit test showed that it lasts only 3/4 the time of the 5X. They need to improve their build quality if anything.

When it's done before? No one (at least major I think) has removed a headset jack from a smartphone.

Yeah I agree about how the service don't fit nicely and that file shit. That's why I never liked Apple.

Well, if anything, Apple fans will have a tough decision of either continuing being loyal and buying the iPhone 7 or to switch to another mobile OS like Android. :P

Also, I wonder if Android will soon begin to be like Apple. >_>

Oh yes, oh yes. So many major Android lines began to adopt the no SD card slot and non-replaceable battery, copying Apple. They do that because, without a SD card slot, they can charge you more (just like Apple, charging 100$ more for 64 GB more storage. And with a non-replaceable battery, most people can't swap out their old batteries to keep on using their old phones and are instead forced to buy a new one.

the point is to make 3mm thinner phones. or just to change things for the sake of change.

as it was said somewhere else, tech was good 30-50 years back or earlier because there was enough progress made to justify occasional upgrades. The progress now is, uh, stalling. That's how it feels when you see things like a smartphone with curved screen borders (useless) or the smart garbage trend.

I agree, the removal of the headphone jack is a HORRIBLE idea. I haven't had a phone long enough for a battery to start failing though. One of the few things Apple seems to have done right lately (well... in the last few years) is the lightning cable. Finally a double sided cable. Unfortunately I am still using the iPhone 4S though, so I have to go out and buy the shitty old outdated charger which isn't sold anymore

I actually didn't know about that Samsung S5 to S6 thing. I've always preferred Samsung devices to Apple, but that's just because Samsung phones are the first thing that come to mind when I think of Android phones. I always say I prefer Samsung to Apple, but I really just prefer Android to iOS.

I really hope the headphone jack stays though. Fuck wireless headphones.

wireless suppresses wires but it comes at the expense of sending waves into everything around and consuming more power. wires are also less vulnerable to interferences and shit.

yeah.

mass lithium harvesting has environmental issues.

not to mention all the crapoed batteries that go to waste, are those even recycled? they're collected in special garbage centers but it just seems like the special garbage piles up there and nobody knows what to do with it

That too.

Also the fact that batteries require charging.

Why charge your phone and your headphones?

it also produces more chargers -- even with the spread of microUSB charging ports, a lot of products come with their charger.

Apple is making their undoing. If the IPhone 7 comes without a headphone jack then people are going to hate on it so bad it'll sell much less than its predecessors and make people much more skeptical of Apple (even, I hope, the technosheep)

I hope they'll think "What will they remove next, the charger port?"

removing the charger port would be feasible given induction charging -- it would be one less port that can receive crap and whatnot.

however, on typical (non-Apple) smartphones it doubles as an USB port for tethering to computers. tethering would only work via Bluetooth or wifi.
