yeah, even if they're muted

the hipsters seem to forget that video playback consumes resources, and just because I have a powerful CPU doesn't mean I want my power to be wasted

you're right. the same crappy sites that make it autoplay with fucking sound.

as far as I'm concerned, it's simple. Any video player that automatically blares sound at me gets adblocked.

Would it be a good idea to adblock everything you don't like or use adblock but enable those that aren't intrusive?

To clarify, one is blanket bans with few exceptions; the other is enable everything, and then block everything you see you don't like.

I'd rather adblock those that piss me off, I don't want to miss shit by adblocking too much.

I should probably also use NoScript, but with the constant increase of omgmodern websites that require Hipsterscript to work, well ugh...

Noscript just doesn't like javascript, which makes it annoying that I have to keep disabling it for websites to work.

This isn't necessarily a web trend, but it grinds my gears that user manuals are located in the Internet rather than as part of the install of a program. See, I have limited Internet access, so if I need to refer to the manual... I can't.

but everyone has permanent unmetered gigabit fiber access!!!!

or so think the dumb hipsters.

speaking of hipsters, some gems among the company websites I saw:

* a company about storage resell/etc. Site has an animated background showing people move super fast in a warehouse. Sure enough, said background is a fucking 22MB video. Metered connection users will all love having their data wasted for that!

* another company about smart maps or whatever. They have a video presenting their service, okay, not terribly bad. Except making it a youtube embed or whatever wasn't cool enough: it plays silently as a background video (again). 14MB this time.

* and there's that other site with the most terrible contact form ever. Dunno what they tried to override with their shitty JS, but it LOVES resetting fields for no reason. Type in email, go to another window, come back, email's gone. Type in message, then check a radio button under the textbox, poof, message's fucking gone. A shame, the website actually looked decent otherwise.

... I want to start a petition to demand that killing web hipsters becomes legal.

Or locking them in a jail cell with a Pentium II computer and a metered dial-up being their only contact with the outer world, and forcing them to try using their websites.

oh also, those of you who use Facebook are probably used to the constant flood of clickbait content (and thinly disguised ads, but those are less present).

well, the clickbait trend is coming to Youtube. The "random related videos" list often has a few of them at the top.

oh, and anyone found out how Youtube video comments are sorted? someone told me they're sorted by popularity (number of likes), but nope.

Another thing is that "Human Verification Survey" crap that pops up when you really need something.

That's when you know that the whole thing was a scam and this thing didn't exist in the first place.

It's not as bad as those surveys whenever you try to get crap for, uh, "free"

human verification actually does kinda make sense, so that bots aren't rigging stuffs

Well, I mean, surveys are ok if they are offered by a trusted company that actually has been proven to give out rewards for their completion (e.g. Swagbucks)

But I think he's talking about the things like "Get a free Amazon Gift Card, etc" and you click the button, and it says something like "hacking the database...please wait" and then the human verification thing pops up. I was an idiot back then and actually tried this until I realized...this is all fake. The surveys keep going forever, and you never get anywhere.

That is true, but when it goes on forever... It kills every nerve.

EXACTLY! I mean, whenever I see that on any website that offers "free" stuff, I close out the tab. Because I know what is gonna happen.

I hate it when websites are restricted from you because you have an Adblocker on. Most of the time you can get around it by deleting some HTML code here and there but that's very tedious and it pisses me off.

They have a point in doing this because it helps to "keep the site alive".

the need for money is legit but not an excuse to be an ass to your visitors. Politely asking is fine, cockblocking users isn't.

Speaking of Adblock haven't you noticed (before you got adblockers anyway) that the ads you saw were extremely irrelevant to your searches? I mean online ads have been around for a while now (about 15-20 years) and advertising is fine within limits but when you can't even get your content to the right audience you're aiming for, that's sad.

;)

Anyway, I've noticed that too. But one good thing about Youtube is (sometimes) the ads kind of are related. Like, on PKSparkxx's Pokemon Go! vlogs, I saw a small ad banner at the bottom for Pokemon Go; Desktop edition. (which is er, a pointless game indeed)

I also see that ad on other gaming videos :P
