so instead we turn them into consumer toys like phones and tablets.

Not really, even Apple and Google don't have an OS Subscription.

yeah but those devices are consumer toys

the point of the subscription thing is mostly to make money forever by basically holding people's PCs as hostages

So I guess it's time to port all Hacking Tools to Linux, as far as it's possible.
Once that's done, I won't even hesitate to turn all my PCs (aka, all Macs + Surface Pro 3 Tablet) into Linux machines.
Because Microsoft isn't the only one who's trying to push their Mobile Experience to PC users, Apple does the exact same thing, except that they do it gradually.

In fact, half of my PCs are already running Linux (MacBook Pro and Mac Mini), and if I ever need Windows (for Unity, Maya, etc.), I can still use VMWare.

I will stick to Windows 7 for as long as possible. Otherwise, Linux.

That would be awesome, but easier said than done.
* "Just use Windows 7" - This excuse will still be perfectly valid until support is dropped.
* Old closed source Windows only programs - If everyone does migrate to Linux, hopefully Wine will mature even faster.
* Learning curve of swicthing from Windows to Linux - If everyone does migrate to Linux, user-friendly distros like Ubuntu will probably adapt to that.
* Linux's reputation of being for hackers/tech-savvy people - I don't know what the solution to this would be.

Eh, that should be moved away from, if we are trying to move away from Windows.

Due to hardware malfunctions, I hesitated on installing a second version of Windows 7 and upgrading it to 10. Now I feel more like I should stay using 7.

Having Windows as a monthly service isn't that bad on its own, but combined by the fact they'll probably force it instead of having an alternative lifetime license version like they do now will not be good for them, probably because they disregarded a few things:

- Even nowadays, there are still a lot of people not connected to the internet. And the ones that do, not all have unlimited internet access, much less acceptable speeds for gigabytes worth of upgrades. Connections can be unstable too, which can cause problems for the renewal of the subscription service.

- This is a good way to combat piracy, but it's a very stupid one. Very useful quote here:
Posted by Gabe Newell
Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24/7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country three months after the U.S. release and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable.

Most DRM solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly restricting a customer's use or by creating uncertainty.

This will end up annoying a lot of users in the long run.

I feel like I already said this, but the hardware malfunction actually prevented me from using Linux (Debian 7, KDE) because it completely froze before I could do anything. I'm buying a new motherboard soon-ish to solve this. Dunno exactly if it's the defective piece of the computer, but it isn't the video card (or the RAM), and random issues related to Audio, Video, Internet and any other type of random error can occur because of it so I think it's a good bet it's the motherboard.

Fake edit: My father said that he thought Linux was "dead" in the eyes of most people, but by doing this Microsoft might actually revive it. Hah!

* Learning curve of swicthing from Windows to Linux

From a Windows users' perspective, yes...
My first OS was MS-DOS, and after that, I've got Linux.
The first time I've ever used Windows (which was Windows XP at secondary School), I was totally lost, as in, I had no idea how the entire thing worked.

So there's not just a "Windows to Linux" learning curve, there's another learning curve for the other way around as well.

As for the VMWare part, I was intending to use it solely for Apps that will never have a Linux Version, such as Unity or Maya.

And also, RanAS, Linux has never been dead, it's just because it never went off the ground on customer level (while it has always been the most popular choice for Servers).

meh.

I'm sticking with Windows 7 for until my computer breaks, pretty much. I like it too much. :P

my computer will break before support ends most likely, since windows vista is still supported to this day and I'll probably just get linux and.. use VMware for everything. Linux because.. I doubt Microsoft can find some way of charging/upgrading me with me using a Windows 7 VM.

Even then, this may only be for companies using Windows 10 Enterprise. Whatever the heck is wrong with them for installing Windows 10, lol. My dad's workplace still uses 7, and I like it that way.

In my opinion, that's no excuse. It's going to happen pretty soon.
Of course people may see that as an excuse, but in my opinion they would just be wasting their time, as if they were trying to live in a deteriorating house until the roof finally gave out.

Why waste your time with an OS that's going to die pretty soon, rather than be prepared for the inevitable? Linux isn't even that hard to use, I tried Linux Mint coming off of Windows, and it was pretty easy to use.

and I can tell you exactly what Microsoft will do

add a dummy "don't track me" checkbox

past that, no way to check whether that's true as it's all closed-source and sent packets are surely encrypted

The CNIL found that Microsoft is collecting "excessive" data on Windows 10 users, including the specific apps they download and how much time they spend on each one.

which serves for, surprise, delivering personalized advertising!

If Microsoft does not comply within the three-month window, the CNIL says it may appoint an investigator who could recommend sanctions against the company.

read: Microsoft will get a slap on the wrist for it.

want to really punish Microsoft and help people at the same time? fucking ban Windows 10.

loool

edge has an ugly user interface to me, tbh

just like the rest of Windows 10. I prefer freaking IE 8 over Edge.

the positive side of this is that this might encourage less shitty coding from Google and others

but otherwise, Microsoft reminds me of my mom. subtly forcing people into their way, not outright saying no but "see, my way is better because X and Y" and other sneaky techniques

You're so annoyed of your mom you compare her to Windows 10? That's low, I dare say almost HarrietTubmanson low.

the tactics she used to try keeping me in her way remind me of the tactics Microsoft are pulling to make people use Edge.

and I'm pretty sure the figures are faked in some way. but if they're real, I can commend Microsoft for that. gotta give credit where it's due.

but that still doesn't excuse the pathetic tactics. pretty sure they'll get in trouble for trying to shoot down competition like that.
