I'm still trying to figure out microsoft's logic

Windows 7 --> Windows 8 --> Windows 8.1 --> Windows 10. That isn't how numbers work, and honestly, with the amount of change Windows 10 really should just be Windows 8.2.

Microsoft's way of counting is more like: 1, 2, 3, 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98/NT4, 98SE, Me/2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10.
Then in that case, they did a much better job counting MS-DOS and Windows Mobile Versions, back when they were still supported.

10 is much cooler for something that will stay 'Windows 10' forever

(which also means that the era of good Windows is over)

They shouldn't have to turn to a cool name to make the OS work.

Also...didn't Microsoft release an update to disable the option to disable automatic updates a while ago? How much longer until they remove the option to disable the Windows Update service? How much longer until the upgrade can't be cancelled anymore?

And will they ever realize that Windows 10 is actually a downgrade, and that they forgot the "for" in front of "get Windows 10"?

and hey, Windows Update has always been an annoyance either way. I remember it breaking my old laptop because it thought it was a perfect idea to start installing updates when I wanted to turn it off to go take the bus.

Doesn't it only installs update when the laptop is only plugged in charging?

For some reason, this laptop 'glitched' out and it always have an update notification when I will shut it down. However, it does nothing when I try to install whatever it wants and just shuts down normally (even though it shows the 'installing updates' just to suddenly 'finish' and shut down).

Though, it doesn't happen when I unplug the laptop. The update notification is gone and it shuts down faster since it doesn't try to install something.

Maybe, but not like you're supposed to know that kind of things. Dunno. I almost always had my laptop plugged in, anyway.

When it says "installing updates, don't turn off", it really means it. I kept turning it off anyway because I wanted to go home already, but once something got broken because of that. I was able to repair it, though. Next thing I did was turn Windows Update off so it wouldn't bother me again.

also Splitwirez could you please avoid putting huge banners in your signature? that 'classic theme for Win10' thing kind of looks like those 'you are the billionth visitor' ad banners.

Woops...

...would a smaller banner be better, then? Or if not, how can I create branding which won't bother you?

EDIT: Just to clarify, it is legit. Look here:
(That's the real classic theme, not just a Visual Style. The taskbar still looks Modern because it doesn't use Visual Styles anymore)

I didn't say it wasn't legit, just that your banner reminds me of those ad banners

a simple text link would be better, it would be less obnoxious and at the same time more trustworthy (the ad banners I mentioned are known for trying to give you viruses or other things that are less than nice)

Oh...

Yeah, I get that. I didn't think anyone would draw that connection, though...um...it'd be nice to retain the style, but...alright...actually, would just a small Windows Classic-styled button with the text on it be acceptable? (Key word "small") If not, I'll just do a text link like you said ._.

EDIT: Wait, is the Neo Mario Galaxy banner an issue too? (It is taller...)

someone tell me why microsoft edge exists

Yami
Posted on 05-15-16 10:18 PM Link | #70743
Simple:
1. Microsoft is the only one allowed to make a Metro Browser.
2. IE just couldn't get as much love as FireFox or Chrome ever got, so they got butt hurt, and made a new Browser with the same Engine Chrome and Safari have.

Arisotura

wrong, Edge uses EdgeHTML which is a Trident fork, it doesn't use Webkit

anyway I guess it was renamed mostly to get away from IE's bad reputation, some also say that they separated Edge and IE because some programs still needed the old crappy IE engine

now I hope Microsoft understood that they need to update it more often than once per year, the era of slowly evolving HTML standards is over

But at this rate nobody's ever going to make something better .___.

EDIT:
Also,

So apparently white text on a translucent yellow rectangle is "high contrast"?? WAT!?

all the themes that aren't the default are completely unmaintained, it's a miracle they even work at all

but obviously Microsoft doesn't give a shit and just hardcodes colors when they make new UIs

Okay it's one thing for the OS to be butt-ugly, but to have the accessibility-enhancing themes be flat-out broken and left to fall apart further...WAT? T________T

Also there is hope...WindowBlinds can skin the whole OS to your exact demands, and Classic Shell can provide a usable Start Menu...and it recently acquired the power to skin the taskbar background, so there's that too.

Yup

At this point, it's almost as though Microsoft be like "Havin trubl reedin da Windoz? Herr, lettuce put ur wite text on blurles transloosnt yellow backgrownd so u kan r33d it moar eezly O: "

Then everyone else be like
"[thumbnail]"

And it wouldn't be as bad if they didn't rearrange the theming engine with practically every second Windows Update (which you're forced to install eventually), as that would be a big problem for anyone aiming to restore some degree of actual functionality.

Also they somehow managed to screw up file dragging .____.
Does anyone here have a list of benefits of Windows 10? Here, I'll start:
-DirectX 12
-Amazing window drop shadows
-Beautiful Window and start menu animations
-Shell is easy to use...assuming you're on a Microsoft Surface of some sort
umm...

...yeah, that's all I've got. Anyone know of other benefits? P:

...no
there are no others

Arisotura

DirectX 12 is only an advantage if game editors are willing to take advantage of it, which will depend on Win10's market share.

And if it gets adopted widely, there will likely be DX12->Vulkan compatibility layers for other systems.

Other than that, the main benefit of Windows 10 is that Microsoft can control you better. It's a benefit for them.

Hm...

...well all the caption buttons are the same size now, which might have theming potential if you ignore the fact that the taskbar can no longer be skinned natively...actually, TrueTransparency and BorderSkin can do that without needing a whole new OS, so nevermind.

the X button always meant "leave me alone"...

but now, with the Win10 upgrade popup, it means "sure, install it now"

and dad "I don't know what's your issue with Windows 10"

even if it's the best OS ever, I refuse to use an OS that is shoved down people's throats via completely desperate and borderline legal methods

because I can tell you what's coming next

if their plans work as expected, Microsoft will surely abuse the control they have gained to extract money from people

ie. "oh, access to Azure (their cloud crap) requires monthly payment now. We hold your files as hostage, feed us money or say goodbye to them :)"

extending their ability to remove programs from your computer to remove any programs they don't like

requiring that all programs come from the Windows Store and be approved by Microsoft

etc...
