I remember imageshit used to be a viable option for an image uploading website

Now you have to pay to use their prenium services aka uploading anything at all after some damn free trial period.

Why the crap would anyone want to use it anymore, especially when crapobucket (even though its slow and crappy) and Imgur are far superior (and actually free) choices to that. And now, everyone who used to use imageshit gets their images replaced by an ugly icon and screws smaller images up.

EDIT: Lol the forum "censoring" ImageShaack

I don't know whatever happened at imageshit or why it thought it was a good idea to break thousands of images people have uploaded just so it can try desperately to swindle people into buying their "premium" shit. I mean, even if I was greedy, I wouldn't do that, I'd do other cynical things like impose an upload/linking/bandwidth limit and if people went over the upload limit prior to the implementation, their images won't break, but they have maybe 20 more images they can upload before being locked by a paywall. Sure, it's dirty and people would just switch to other services, but it's still smarter than what imageshit does.

now we just have to wait until a cloud provider pulls the same shit, demanding payment and holding your files in hostage until you feed them

Man, that sounds like it's happening already.

Just imagine what would happen.

"Ah! I have sensitive information in there!"
"You signed your rights away to our terms of service, it says so right there."
"......"

You know what other trends should die?

Shitty algorithms used for stuff that's clearly not suited for it. Which means a hell lot of false positives. It's not just Youtube copyright crap, it's also in Facebook, where you could get harassed for saying "niggardly" (a completely innocuous word, mind you, despite its spelling) or even reposting a blog entry you particularly like by morons and those same morons who don't like your beliefs will abuse those algorithms to annoy and then even ban you. Yes, that has happened (and the author of that article also got harassed on facebook by the same type of jerks). If YOU report the harassment? Tough shit, nothing ain't gonna happen.

(as a clarification, I don't hate OOP, I'm all for using it where it makes sense and not for every damn thing)

but alas, web dev is going bullshit (new rule, according to Youtube: testing your code isn't cool anymore either)

I agree entirely: I also only use OOP if needed, like for something I need to repeat across multiple Files/Pages.
Other than that, I just do procedural Code.

Because really, I don't give a flying toss about Functions like these:
function WhyDoIEvenExist (string $text) {
return $text;
}

echo WhyDoIEvenExist ("while I can also be outputted without this Function?!");

@Yami I haven't even heard of half those. The thing about frameworks/libraries is that they should be utilized only when necessary - not exist as a default part of a developer's arsenal. Unfortunately whoever is in charge of posting jobs is clueless regarding tech, or worse, the one in charge of the tech is just as clueless.

And how many times do you think I've seen Job Openings with Titles like "Web Programmer wanted for WordPress", "Program Website from scratch in WordPress", etc.?
I mean, do you want a Website from scratch, or in WordPress?!
Pick one, God Damn It!

I've heard of cases in which people have tried to build sites within Smarty. Forget your fully functional interpreted language, you should use a 'language' interpreted within that. That's the very definition of insanity!

I do wonder where this 'perverted' mindset came from that the extensive use of frameworks/libraries are essential, and who defines what "modern" practices are. My best guess would be those scene kids who turned to hipsters in 2011 wanted to start their obligatory WordPress blogs, desired to add functionality to them, and took over the widely visible 'community'.

One thing I want to die is Disqus. You have no control over it, you have to pay for it, and the fact you're paying for/own some form of hosting means you have 0 need to hand the responsibility of handling comments to someone else. It's a scam. Apparently they only test their services on the newest iPhone and Google Chrome for Windows, so good luck getting it to load. It's also one letter away from being called Disqust.

qft

really, the more you make your code inefficient, the best it is

(I partly suspect that they do that to justify making you buy more powerful CPUs, although this is borderline conspiracy theory)

'from scratch' and 'in Wordpress' are incompatible, it's like saying "I want to build a house from scratch based on this building"

So that's what's wrong with Disqusting. I always thought its user-hostile layout and comment moderation were crappy, but there has to be more to it.

There is one more web trend that really annoys me, and it's that overlay thing that covers up your page if you scroll down long enough. Pinterest and Facebook are guilty of it for starters. It's so obnoxious though, like they're begging you to sign up just so you can get rid of that annoying overlay that ends up blocking your screen as you scroll down. I hate it so much.

alternately, get µblock and block the overlay :)

(doesn't quite cut it when you fall across assholes who also disable the scrollbar or do whatever lame trick)

Im not much of a web developer myself (I don't do it very often), but since i've been going through js this year in my schools programming course i've seen a lot of what I guess could be considered hipster code.

Personally, I find that the biggest problem with hipster code is trying to make things fancy, and the programmer basically brain masturbating to "look how complicated I can make this look". I see it like the difference between a rube goldberg machine that makes a light turn on and a button that does the same, both work, but one is just a whole lot easier to break and much too complicated for its own good.

frankly I suspect they make all that inefficient hipster code to purposely consume more resources and justify that you buy more powerful hardware

take a 2006 computer for example, the 2006 web was fine on it but the 2016 web would be nearly unusable

this board has code that is so 1990 (procedural PHP! no framework! vanilla JS in small amounts!), but it's usable without requiring a fucking 3GHz CPU

code then:
print("Hi there!");

code now:
char shitlol[10];
int n = 0;
shitlol[n++] = 'H';
shitlol[n++] = 'i';
shitlol[n++] = ' ';
shitlol[n++] = 't';
shitlol[n++] = 'h';
shitlol[n++] = 'e';
shitlol[n++] = 'r';
shitlol[n++] = 'e';
shitlol[n++] = '!';
shitlol[n++] = 0;

print(shitlol);

nah, not hipster enough, you need to use an object for every damn thing, this code looks like C and that's so 1990 and so obsolete

and where's the trendy JS framework

Whoa, didn't know software existed precisely to stop annoying web trends from taking over your insanity.

As for coding, this reminds me of the English language, where we're encouraged to bloat and bloat and sound pretentious and important. Insurance policies, bank statements, business PSAs, adding "-ize" to everything to sound smart (e.g. "utilize", "containerize"). You also have authors like E.B. White and George Orwell commenting on this matter, so I suppose the need to bloat and be convoluted has existed for a while.

Since it's "-ise" in the Eastern Hemisphere (Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania)...

"I seeise what you meanise by soundingise smarterise".
Fuck, that didn't work.

µblock supports blocking certain URLs or types of content like ABP, but also specific page elements via CSS selectors :)

I started using µblock recently and have found it really nice, especially for those "pls dont block our ads" ads on news sites that cover the whole page.

When programming in Javascript however, sometimes you just can't but create a Rube Goldberg machine. Due to the async nature of the language, things get complicated rather quick.
