Any stupid ads you have seen on TV, heard on radio or whatever?

There's this ad on French TV currently, it's for organic baby food. The ad is all babies crying. I don't know who is the idiot who had that idea... as said in Cracked.com about Yoshi's island:

Did you know that human beings are biologically programmed to find a baby's crying unpleasant? If you answered 'yes', congratulations, you're smarter than Nintendo.

Even then, I fail to see how seeing so many babies cry would make you want to buy their food. It kind of sends the opposite message, "see, all the babies hate it!".

I can also remember that ad for some Mir washing powder, that was utterly dumb.

A woman wearing a red dress. A man starts talking to her:

"hey, is it a new dress?"

her: "no, I use Mir!" all while taking a pack of it from her handbag

who fucking carries a pack of washing powder in their handbag?!

and there are all those typical ads:

man deodorant: he puts it on and then starts doing crazy shit like jumping between buildings

woman deodorant: she puts it on and goes to an event where everyone is dressed in white, but she's dressed in black

cleanup product: they show you a ridiculously dirty bathroom that you never see, and their product makes it uber clean instantly

bank: 95% of the bank ads are the same dumb shit where they compare the bank to a girlfriend/wife -- who loves their bank?

You forgot about the part where they compare their product to other products and show how bad theirs are :)

No specific ads come to mind for me, but I hate ads that seem to be more obnoxious in terms of volume than all the other ads. Like video ads in Youtube suddenly blasting its volume.

Yes, I do use adblock most of the time, but when I don't....

Honestly, I didn't find Baby Mario's cry to be that annoying in Yoshi's Island. I can live with it. However, Nintendo is still dipshits for making Baby Mario an unlikable character, so unlikable that you want to save him just to shut him up, rather than making him so cute and likable that you DON'T want him to get captured.

The Yoshi's Island series depiction of him is borderline insulting compared to what Nintendo did to him in the Mario spin-offs, including Partners in Time, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf and the Mario Kart games (but most notably Partners in Time). People conveniently ignore those games that Baby Mario is playable in, where he's a lot better than he is in Yoshi's Island, where although he could cry, he's also shown to be charming and adorable. Hell, those games are the reason I even like him in the first place.

Sorry, I had to rant, I'm a Baby Mario fan who does agree that Baby Mario is a waste of space in Yoshi's Island, but everywhere else he's awesome.

We have those stupid Cox ads over here in the US.
It starts off with this stereotypical family.
Then the stereotypical sun starts complaining about the stupid shit the dad does.
The dad then comes into the room, and starts doing said stupid shit.
In the other versions of the ad, the stereotypical dad annoys their stereotypical neighbor.

Pretty much everyone in those ads acts like an idiot.

Personally I don't see much of an issue with the content of ads on TV and YouTube. So what? People are idiots in an ad. It's funny. And when it isn't, the fact that a professional advertising company or whatever failed at stupidity is.

What does bother me is dishonesty. All those ads where the product being advertised is "50% more effective than the leading brand". Think about it this way...if that were true, wouldn't this superior product be the leading brand? If they could prove that the test wasn't skewed, and tell us who the leading brand is, I might take them seriously. And beyond that, rather than conducting a test of a cleaning product in a super-sterile lab environment, why not do it in the environment the product will be used in? Ofc there will be circumstances, so do a bunch of tests in such environments and find the average result.

Recently in my English class we were studying Advertisements and how it manipulates their target audience into buying a product they are trying to sell and we had to write an essay about it. You got to chose from two different ad's and you had to find all the persuasive techniques from the ad. The two choices where Hoverball and HD Night Vision Glasses and I chose the glasses ad. I had to watch the ad OVER and OVER again and that's when I realised how bad the acting was in it. It was then that I also realised that they are just selling glasses with yellow lenses and they tried to sell sunglasses as their own product. I find the ad stupid and repetitive and they make false claims.

Our cleaning product ads don't claim to be better than "the leading brand", they just claim to be oh so better than brand X (which means any other brand).

Except every ad pulls the same shit.

There are a bunch other ads that do that same crap.

It's like the first time I had to pick deodorant. I didn't really know which one to choose, because uh, according to the ads, they're all amazing and better than everything else.

Duh. They want to ingrain their ads so much in your head that you eventually crack and buy their products, thinking that they just might stop once you buy their products, but then they send you other's ads for more junk and the cycle begins again forever or as long as they can make it possible.

I think what's even more hilarious is that the mere act of brushing your teeth (without toothpaste) does most of the work of getting rid of plaque

I distrust pretty much every ad I see. I always think there is some sort of sleazy, sinister side to them. They might tell you one fact, but they leave out a more important one. For instance, a yogurt being fat free, but it actually contains a crapton of sugars.

I also like how food ads have pictures of succulent, beautiful food, but in real life, they're soggy and crumbled. I believe these foods were taken in some studio and the people there add pretty gross substances for a picture-esque food, like soap bubbles in milk, lip gloss for cherry color, shaving cream for whipped cream, shoe polish for meat (the meat isn't even cooked, just had a blowtorch), and other things like toothpicks to hold the food in place.

also fat is actually an extremely important part of your diet, and what actually makes food taste good, so really "fat free" means "less healthy and tasty"

LeftyGreenMario
Posted on 04-08-16 10:25 PM Link | #69573
Of course, I avoid anything "fat-free". I usually go for regular full-fat products. And guess what, I'm 5'1'' and weigh 95 pounds. Useless anecdotes aside, not only does fat make food taste good, they're high in calories for a reason: they make you feel full. That's why drinking disgusting skim milk and eating fat-free yogurt doesn't make you satisfied, so you just reach for another serving and you end up loading up on sugar or other bad stuff instead. And that's not touching on how some vitamins are fat-soluble, meaning that your body won't easily absorb some nutrients without fat. Fat-free antioxidant-filled Vitamin Water? Nope, without external sources of fat, you'll just end up flushing Vitamins A, D, E, and K away.

On the flip-side, products merely advertised as "fat-free" can elicit a negative impression in consumers, making them think they're tasting something worse even if it's actually the original product inside the box saying "fat-free".

I've seen a couple of weird and stupid ads.
Like there was a strange YTP like ad that wasn't advertising anything. The video was pitch shifts and a weird baby candy. There is also a alligator biting a guys hand or kind of biting it. It could funny at first, but I find it weird because it is not advertising anything.

I think the worst one is a YouTube video advertising a game you can actually play on YouTube. And the ad is a loading screen. *facepalm*

I can't find a link because I remember the name, but are people this stupid to think YouTube itself loads? Yeah buffering, but this an ad not a game.
