'next-gen' as in those new PCs with UEFI, who are the step between the good old useful PCs and the new consumer toys.

So far, I have two laptops:

* old: Asus EeePC, Windows 7/Ubuntu. Serviceable, but not really fast (can't play a Youtube video without lag)...

* new: new Asus model with killer CPU etc...

Came with Windows 8 (and its share of OEM bloatware), updated to 10, which is all less than ideal.

Absurdly high density display. Nice in theory, in practice means that in Win8 and up, half the windows size up nicely, the other half are just rendered at their normal resolution and stretched and look ugly. Hope Windows 7 does better...

Touchscreen. Might be useful I guess, although I'm not a big fan of having a screen full of finger traces.

UEFI. Of course. Well, oldschool BIOS screens don't render well on consumer toys, so eh.

The new laptop would be a pretty good computer, but I need to upgrade it to Windows 7 before anything. Will try getting into that whenever I have time...

I personally prefer 10 over 7, mostly because it's way better optimized. Not even really sure what the appeal of 7 is anymore. I've used 10 since around a month after the official release came out, and I've yet to have a problem with it.

On the contrary, I applaud how Arisotura uses the term "upgrade" to mean "switch to a better version", rather than "switch to a newer version" XD

I guess people don't like the modern UI, eye-burningly hideous aesthetic style, inability to properly change that style, keylogger, issue-proneness, susceptability to nonfunctionality induced by the lack of an option to fallback to CPU screen drawing, tendency for GPU screen drawing to break, tendency for thr entire OS to implode at random, start menu, cortana, Edge browser, painful process of making Edge not your default browser, and explorer ribbon UI included in Windows 10 P:

not sure what the appeal of 10 is, either, beyond "omg it's all new and cool"

7 already does everything I need, and I don't want 10's intrusive features (taking the decision to delete programs and files for me? no thanks)

Why not just isolate windows 10 into the smallest partition possible, install windows 7 using a bootable drive into a separate partition, and set it to automatically boot 7 instead of 10?

actually, I was able to install Win7:

* turn off safe boot
* enable CSM or whatever it was
* disable USB xHCI mode

now it's a mess regarding drivers though

also, scaling: not really part of Win7... can set it to 200%, but it looks derpy (and the login screen doesn't scale)

I was able to install Ubuntu alongside Win7. It went nicely.

So far:

Windows 7

* driver mess mostly solved (good. ASUS' website is a pile of shit when it comes to getting drivers)

* resolution set to 1600x900 instead of 3200x1800. HiDPI support isn't good enough, things look derpy and some don't scale at all

* login screen CAN be scaled via registry hacking (heh, Windows), I gave up on scaling tho

* lack of UEFI fittings (reboot to BIOS) is no big deal, the old 'press key on boot' trick still works

* Win7 isn't installed in UEFI mode, neither is Ubuntu, doesn't matter though (couldn't install Win7 in UEFI mode as it needed a driver and I failed to find the right one)

Ubuntu

* HiDPI support good, set scaling to 2 and it's all nice

* came with drivers for everything. take note, Windows

* the F2 key doubles as 'toggle airplane mode' with a light; under Ubuntu the light is on (used as numlock light? no numlock key so dunno) and (surprise) the key doesn't toggle wifi or anything

general shit

* need to figure out what's up with shutdown, if it's plugged in it just keeps turning back on

* touchpad design could be better. It has those clickable buttons in the bottom, but said buttons are also part of the touchable zone, which is a bad idea and tends to make the buttons frustrating to use. Maybe I can hack together drivers that ignore the button zone :P

* the chpechial laptop function keys probably don't work worth a damn, like on the old laptop, not like it matters though. actually, volume keys work under Ubuntu, but screen brightness doesn't. dunno about Windows
