(or not)

So as you may already know, I got two broken DS Lite's. A black one and a light blue one. I hoped to do two things:

* fix the buttons in my (white) DS Lite, dpad right and A are loose
* maybe mix case parts together for cool colors

But the hacker inside me hopes to do more. So far:

Those DS's don't start. When plugged in, the charge light turns on for one second and turns off. Even with a good battery inserted.

One of them has a broken battery, probably Blue. Blue is in bad shape.

Some research shows that the fuses F1 and F2 can be responsible for that.

Blue doesn't react to shorting its fuses.

When shorting F2, Black does start, sorta... bottom screen flashes white, nothing from top screen, then it goes off. This is said to happen when the top screen is absent or broken.

I tried swapping Black's top screen with Blue's. When shorting F2, Black now starts and seems functional... except Blue's top screen is damaged, what a shame.

okay, so I replaced Black's F2 fuse... man, soldering SMD components is a fucking pain in the ass

but there we are, now Black is functional and only needs a good top screen

said top screen has been ordered and may take a while to arrive

this is Black playing MKDS, I 'played' for a while and it works fine

the wreckage at the top is Blue's broken top screen which I had tried to disassemble (I wanted to see if I could use Blue's bottom screen to replace Black's faulty top screen, but nope: the screens are the same but the ribbons are different and they're part of the screens)

DS Lite is not my type of thing. It's messed up that Nintendo has shut down WIFI Communication on DS and Wii. It's old consoles anyways.

my DS is done getting customized, using all the non-damaged parts I could salvage from Blue

also, I received the top screen for Black, and now it's fully functiona

except getting a cheapo non-genuine screen wasn't so much a good idea, it's not as good as the original one

it also has a stuck pixel that I haven't been able to fix so far :/

I ordered a genuine screen, we'll see how that turns out

And your point is...?

My point is... I don't use DS anymore, it sucks and discontinued those products. I'm not sure what you mean by that..

Well your post has three different parts:

"DS Lite is not my type of thing. It's messed up that Nintendo has shut down WIFI Communication on DS and Wii. It's old consoles anyways."

1. I don't like the DS Lite
2. Nintendo shouldn't have shut down the DS/Wii WFC
3. Those consoles are old, it's normal that they shut it down

the last two are kind of contradicting eachother, that's all

anyway, the DS is 12 years old, it's kind of normal that it's discontinued as well as the relevant services (maintenance costs money too)

in other news, I got the proper top screen for Black... and it's really proper, has slightly different backlight but other than that it's a genuine screen

for comparison, the cheapo one didn't have the typical trace effect of DS screens, seemed to use interlacing or something, and had even more different backlight (and had a stuck pixel I wasn't able to fix)... I'm keeping that one as a spare part anyway, along with a spare bottom screen

if you wish to know: a good test for a proper trace effect is the water levels of NSMBDS

there are those coins in blue bubbles, the transparency effect of the bubbles is done by alternating opaque-blue and transparent background colors every frame

the effect is visible if you play the game on desmume, for example, but on the DS it looks like a stable translucent blue because the screens have a higher response time than your typical PC monitor (hence the trace effect)
