My phone is two years old. Okay, not too bad huh.

It's fine for what I do, so I haven't asked for a new one at Christmas. And I'm all against that planned obsolescence bullshit, I always try to keep things for as long as possible.

Of course, promptly after that, the phone started showing signs of "buy a new phone you idiot". The power button works at random, sometimes it works normally, sometimes I have to press absurdly hard. Yay.

Doesn't help that there's also that other issue, really annoying. At random, something keeps the CPU busy and drains the battery absurdly fast.

So much for smartphones and their epic power, by the way. 1+GHz CPUs are cool but absolutely pointless if full speed drains your battery in 5 minutes.

I tried to diagnose the issue, even resorting to one of those wakelock monitoring apps. All I can get says the same thing, something in the system itself is at fault.

And this phone hasn't gotten updates in ages. Well, except one. HTC cared to provide an update for the stagefright exploit, but that's all, they have no problem with leaving me with a buggy system that keeps draining the battery. Well of course, it's already obsolete. Maybe the bug is even actually intended...

Solution so far? Reboot every time it happens.

I'm contemplating installing CyanogenMod or something else.

Vendors of household appliances and electronics shit go to such lengths to enforce planned obsolescence. Have you not noticed how your devices never break during their warranty, but break afterwards?

You may even have tried to fix them, only to see them develop other problems later on. The vendors saw it coming. Eventually you run into something that you can't disassemble and/or can't replace because it's a proprietary part specific to your model and not available anymore.

And those devices last what, a few years... 30 years ago, devices were built to last, and it shows. For example we have a microwave that is 30 years old or more, and it still works fine. I challenge you to find a modern microwave that lasts that long.

Don't be a consuming tool. Say no to planned obsolescence. The only thing it's good for is economy. Don't forget that Earth's resources aren't infinite.

Anyway, have you had related stories?

Android Phones are like OEM Windows PC's: They get unusable after 2 years.
However, my Nexus 5 is almost 2 years old, and it's still working fine.

On the other hand, when I take a look at my old Lumia 820, and to my newer Lumia 930 (both Windows 10), both still feel like freshly new, even though the 820 is about as old as the Nexus 5.

What HTC do you own? I also have an HTC which received a Heartbleed patch, but I'm on 4.1. There are custom roms out there, but those with a good camera are all Sense based and below 5.0.

There is Cyanogenmod available of course, but the photos are just really bad.
And there is no fastboot, which is really important for me :(.

HTC Desire 601. A nice one for what I do, and looks good too. It's on 4.4.2 iirc.

I also like the HTC interface, something I'd lose if I switched to something else.

I'm on Sense 4. It's not really that pretty, but I like it. It's pretty much the only OEM layer I actually appreciate.

The battery is also draining faster, I believe. Oh boy.

happens with time, the battery inevitably gets less efficient

doesn't help when something hogs the CPU, though (you can go in the power settings to check if it's happening)

So, I'm on Safari on my iPad, and for some reason, even though 1) the page has already loaded and 2) I have not touched the screen or made any input after the page loaded or even while it loaded, it decides it was a good idea to CRASH!

My iPad 2 is on IOS 9+, so apps constantly crash. IOS 7 and higher is pretty much Apple's way of telling you to get a new device, or face lots of lagging and crashing. It sucks.

Well, I have a Virizon/Android/Google LG Ally that's lasted since 2011.

It gets the job done.

I just use a flip phone because smart phones don't have anything that interests me. I don't know how long flip phones last for but, hopefully awhile though.

well, smartphones can be handy when they give you internet access, emails, or some games

but they're meant to be consumer toys

I just noticed some screen burn-in on my phone. It's AMOLED, and that tends to happen.
RIP

Today, I officially broke my Nexus 5, after 1 year and 11 months of service.
I dropped it, and the screen is all broken, so now I need to use my Windows 10 Phone (Lumia 930) full time, until I get a Nexus 5X.
Once I have a Nexus 5X, I can continue swapping my SIM Card back and forth again.

I was a FOOL to throw away our 90/2000's Tiger desktops. If knew that lightweight software solutions existed I would've kept both of them and optimized their software instead. We also had a 2009 Acer Extenza which I donated a couple years ago so there's less guilt getting rid of the laptop.

I recently rigged my Nexus 5 and Moto G 2015 with the crDroid version that is based on Android 10. Saves money so it sure beats buying the latest and greatest phones out there.

I also have a Teracube One, the flat fee for repairs is $39 last time I checked. Pre-ordered it and got a discount. Pretty decently priced for a mid-ranged phone anyways, $300.

or keep these for 10-20 more years, then they're vintage and you can sell them for big bucks
