Don't go fiddling with your NAND (which I think sysUpdater fiddles with). NAND modding is really unpolished.

If you want better permissions for homebrew, don't downgrade, just wait for better exploits.

1. It's completely safe—just stay away from tools like sysUpdater, etc.
2. You need to put some files on the SD card, no way around that. You'll need to extract the starter kit from here to the root of your SD card. To launch homebrew you can use browserhax as described on the page and then install menuhax, which the others using the 3DS shouldn't notice unless they hold the button combination to trigger it.

I have no problem hiding files and stuff on an SD card that is fine. But do I need to use the 3ds to download the software? In other words do I need to download it with my 3ds?

Nope. You download all necessary files with your computer and copy them to your SD card.

Okay thank you! Just by pure coincidence (and luck) I happen to have picked up an extra SD card a while ago that is not in use. That makes it a lot easier because now I don't need to come up with an excuse to get one.

EDIT: As you said I'll just use the SD card that came with it. That thought actually never crossed my mind.

Why use a seperate SD card.
I'm not even sure that it will work because if the SDs get out of sync one might fail.

Just go ahed and use the original one.

I'm on O3DS SysNAND 9.2, and rxTools EmuNAND 10.5 (unlinked). Is it possible for me to play DS roms (I don't have a flash card)?

Nope, currently there isn't.

(Scold me, if I'm wrong)

Not yet but there is a theory that if it works we will be able to get games running but not saving.

I fail to see how they'd "get out of sync", the 3DS doesn't rely on the SD card to operate, and SD card apps are contained entirely on the SD
