I'm currently translating an anime to my launguage, by putting the text directly in the episode using Movie Maker, and I already found subtitles for the first episodes, but those subtitles were SRT files. I want to have the subtitles in the episode so I don't need VLC everytime and everywhere I want to play them. And I also want to upload them on YouTube, which can be hard if the text isn't in the video.

I want to know how to put an SRT (.srt) file into an MP4 file, how to merge them. I've Googled around for programs and none of them were good. There actually was a good one named Xvid4PSP, but converting with that software takes like 3-10 hours for a 24 mins episode. I would like to have the text white, with black outline around the letters. By the way, converting with VLC doesn't work for some reason. Either the text doesn't come in the output video or there's nothing but sound in the video.

Anyway, do anybody know a good and fast program that you can merge an MP4 file with an SRT file with?

You know, if you want to hardcode subtitles, you literally have to reprocess almost every frame. You're basically rerendering the whole thing. There's no magic trick as far as I can tell that will make it go faster, except for buying a nice Intel processor, unfortunately.

Well, fine. If there aren't any other faster thing then I have to wait 5 hours, that's it. But I have another question, which format supports other characters than A-Z, like the Swedish ones Å, Ä and Ö? I tried with UTF-8 and UTF-32, but none of them could read those letters.

This page is now being coded in UTF-8, so its odd if your letters don't show up. Besides, Å, Ä and Ö are part of ascii too, so you don't even need fancy encoding.

Also I think that youtube got a feature to display subtitles which you can manually insert.

Yes but the SRT file just comes in the video when you enable text on the video. I want to have it merged with the video.

Anthe: By the way, why can some programs do that in 15 mins and Xvid4PSP in 5 hours? There must be a program as good as Xvid4PSP but faster.

This is the first thing I found on the Googles:

You can apparently also use Handbrake; I found this tutorial:

Both VidCoder and HandBreak are the same software. It's fast, but it can't read the special swedish letters and the subtitle text is ugly.

I am sorry but I cannot believe it can't read the "Swedish" letters. The "Swedish" letters are in basic ascii as Å(0xC5) Ä(0xC4) Ö(0xD6). So I think you are doing something wrong, otherwise the program couldn't display any european language.

I think it has with the program to do, and not with the format.

Are you sure your subtitle files are encoded correctly?

Yes, I am. They are structured like a SRT file should. I think it's just HandBrake that don't know swedish. I don't like HandBrake's subtitle-style so it's not that important to get the letters working with it.

I mean encoding. SRT is just a text file so if the encoding is wrong it's probably all messed up. Also, I'm fairly sure handbrake allows you to customise the font of the subtitles.

Oops, I'm sorry. I didn't knew that you could choose launguage in text settings xD. So now I have on Swedish, in UTF-8. But I couldn't find out how to edit the text style.

http://www.videohelp.com/software/MediaCoder allows you to change font and size, it seems. Haven't tested it, though. You don't have to do this, though. You can embed subtitles in a file using the MKV format, even players on Android such as MXPlayer will pick up the subtitles.

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but...I assume the MXPlayer you speak of is not the same one as the one from Windows Codename Longhorn build 4093?

I don't think I need a program anymore because I've decided to copy the text from the SRT file and put it directly in the episode using Windows Movie Maker. I'm doing it by hand, I think that's better after all. It's also easier to edit the start and end time for the text directly in the video than editing the SRT, which is separated from the video. Still, thanks for the help! (don't close this thread though, who knows what will happen in the future?)
