A few things we've looked at. Turns out some of the data is...interesting

Enjoy! :)

You know, I kinda think I was a tad harsh on the Wii U and its games...

I didn't know the NSMBW power-ups were still a thing!
---
Anyways, I feel that these will be used in future ROM hacks!

Was the bubble Yoshi itself unused or is it supposed to shoot bubbles, but doesn't?

I have 3 theories based on this (note, I have no proof, I'm just speculating):
1. I'm pretty sure Nintendo just used an improved NSMBW engine. So just a leftover from NSMBW when they ported over the engine.
2. Nintendo probably intended on using them in the final game, and then decided against it, but were later scrapped in development.
3. They were in the game as a test import, or to see if power-ups work properly.

They are used in the game. You can get them from world 9 toad houses, just not from blocks.

There's a lot of NSMBW leftovers, for a fact.

Well, I didn't know that, as I did not even get to world 8 yet.

If this game is just built off an improved NSMBWii engine, does that mean the hammer suit from newer wii can be ported over without too much hastle? ASM is already a thing with this game, right?

This is indeed another iteration of the engine used in NSMBW, but it's different enough that porting anything like that is impossible. If someone were to make a Hammer Suit for NSMBU, they'd have to start over. The code from Newer would only be useful as a guide on what needs to be done.

Is NSMB2 more similar to NSMBW or NSMBU, do you think? Could stuff be ported from/to NSMB2 from/to NSMBW or NSMBU?

Gattan is my favorite. We just need to add it BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! effects and we have a perfect dumb ice block. :D

is the flagpole unused too

Hiccup: As far as I can tell, NSMB2 and NSMBU were both developed as a single codebase for a while after NSMBW was released, since they both share a lot of the same changes. So despite what the assets would suggest, NSMB2 is more similar to NSMBU than NSMBW.

With that said, it's a completely different architecture (ARM vs PPC), so code porting is out of the question. And the difference in endianness means that copypasting files will never, ever work: you'll always need a converter of some sort.

you can convert them, though, with limits. NSMBU's graphics are huge.
