So after 1 and a half weeks of almost non-stop work and some allnighters, I have finally managed to pull together the first ever full custom level for the WiiU game, New Super Mario Brothers U. So who needs Super Mario Maker?
This level includes
  • A whole new zone!
  • A completely new level with enemies, pipes
  • Some moving platforms
  • And much more!

Although, there is no such thing as a first full custom level without some bugs. Some of these include:
  • 2 star coins, the 3rd one didn't work for some reason
  • A small tileset error
  • Some blocks spawn nothing (0 nybble on a ? block spawns nothing)
  • Another small tileset error, in the little tunnel with the background dirt

I would like to give a shoutout to RoadrunnerWMC, Marionumber1, NWPlayer123, and others for all their help to make this possible.

did you do this with only a hex editor? or did you make yourself a tool? could you give us a brief explanation on how you did this?

Assuming you used the kernel exploit, I would like a brief tutorial as well.
Status: It was really, really fun, guys - thanks for the ride!

MrBean has a video of Cafiine in action, which is the tool used to do file replacement. It does require a PPC kernel exploit; this has not been released yet, but we're planning to soon. In fact, I'm working on it right now.

I have to wonder.

Any unused stuff in NSMBU? Like levels, sprites?

How does the backgrounds work this time? There seems to be now multiple layers.

Also I suppose that kernel exploit doesn't work with the newest wii u version.

I might be wrong, but I'm almost certain that the backgrounds are 3D models.

Yes, but I was referring as if its possible to change them.

How are they composed, if they are like in past games when they are layers of 3d objects.

What context you asking that in?
Custom backgrounds? Or changing the background to another retail one?

There are lots and lots of unused sprites and settings. I found out what some of them do by looking at the assembly code, but there's still a lot more to explore when we can test custom levels.

This...

...is revolutionary!

You, my good sir, have just created a new hacking scene! (Not counting that one texture hack)

Yes. Swapping backgrounds.

Like, having a forest background in front and then a desert background at the back.

Well they'd have to be textured together, then.

Only because there's no 5.4.0 browser exploit yet. The kernel exploit works on 5.3.2, and the kernel wasn't changed in 5.4.0, so it's definitely still usable once we have code execution.

Nice, but it seems you were only able to use the assets already present in the level :(

I was actually able to use anything I wanted. I just didn't jump out of the theme.

I don't believe you answered Jesse's question. I'd be interesting to hear an answer for that one. Anyway, hopefully you won't rush off to make "New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe" and have it fail in 1 month.

Oh, I didn't notice that question.

I first start off making the level NSMBW Reggie, with the tileset numbers matching the ones in NSMBU.

Here's the NSMBW version

I place sprites as usual and I edit the first 4 sets (some had the last 2 so those were hex edited) and then I exported them. I ran it through a converter and used the NSMBU editor (which can't save) to load the 'blocks' and made adjustments where needed.

The documentation of these blocks

I use that to hex edit the offsets for settings.
