Ok, here's my theory on how we can divide by zero:

Fact families.

Any number multiplied by zero is zero, that reversed would mean any number divided by zero would be zero.

proof?

Say you have 24 apples (yes I'm being THAT guy), and you distribute them amongst 0 people. The "people" would include yourself [that don't get any].

So if you divide by zero, nobody gets any apples, you just... throw them out or something.

(point is 24/0=0)

Share your thoughts on this, or any way to improve this theory of mine.

Welcome back to class
When we try to divide by zero, things dont make sense
that's all for today's lesson

You could as well say that something divided by zero is infinity:

10/1 = 10
10/0.1 = 100
10/0.01 = 1000
10/0.001 = 10000
10/0 = infinity

When you divide by zero, it creates an Acmlmboard. Everyone knows it.

Then what happens when you multiply by zero? :3

You get an Acmlm.

If you include yourself, that increases the number to 1, ruining the metaphor already.

(point is 24/0=0)

The problem with dividing by zero is that you can't multiply anything by zero and get a number that isn't zero. Division is like subtraction in that you can read the completed question backwards and as addition/multiplication, and it will make all the sense in the world. So, let's give that a try:

4/2=2
2*2=4

That makes sense, right? Now let's try your division by 0:

24/0=0
0*0=24

0*0 cannot equal anything other than 0, so the equation is disproved.

Ultimately X/0 is going to be infinity because no real number can be multiplied by 0 and end up with a positive number.

So, the real answer is:

24/0=∞
∞*0=24

This has been an episode of "taking possible jokes seriously" with MercuryPenny! We will be right back after this commercial break.

I agree that it's infinity, but for a different reason.
I think of division as "putting numbers in numbers". What I mean by that is you can fit 4 3's in the number 12, so 12/3 is 4.
Since zero is nothing, you can fit an infinite number of zeros into any other number.
x/0= infinity. There is one problem with thinking of it this way, though.
Would 0/0 be 1?

Would 0/0 be 1?

Of course. It's also 50, 24, 152, 256, 5000 and every other number in existence.

Yes, zero divided by zero is all numbers, integers and non integers, real and non real. So technically, 0/0 should be all numbers, not undefined.

Just look at a rational function. Here's a little calculus for ya. Just limits though.
You have a function y=1/x. When x = 0,
lim x->0 right, y= + infinity
lim x->0 left, y= - infinity

You can see the asymptote at x=0. Graphing should be enough to understand why it is infinity.
I like to look at it like Kinnay wrote. It helps imagine the concept of getting closer to infinity by division

I can honestly say this makes the most sense to me. Since numbers can continue to an infinite length, it would only be logical to say that zero could too.

If you kept dividing zero like this, it would continue infinitely.

Therefore being infinity.

I can't say.

here's the thing:

you have 24 apples

you have to divide them evenly among x people

the amount of apples each person gets is the answer to 24/x.

12 people? 2 apples each

16 people? an apple and a half each.

8 people? 3 each.

1 person? they get all 24.

0 people? umm... you can't give apples to people if there's no one to give them to. You get the answer when you dole (lol) out all the apples, which is impossible since there's no one to give them to.

therefore, there's no real answer.

...unless you make up a number (u, for undefined) where 1/0=u, 2/0=2u, etc. Hey, this isn't the first time it's been done ( √(-1)=i ).
