High school computers had a really limited Start menu, pretty much limited to the programs we were supposed to use.

Bored? Windows-R winmine enter. I guess there were plenty of other possibilities too, but never looked much.

Didn't work at my next school though. The fuckasses actually went through the system folders to delete the games. No fun zone! It's worth noting that there was a room where the computers didn't have the games deleted, though.

I also took the MAC address of a broken machine and entered it in my computer. With that, I could plug into their ethernet and enjoy 40+ Mbps internet instead of the ~2 Mbps the wifi provides.

Originally did that to help a schoolmate gain access to a phpPgAdmin interface we were supposed to use for a database course, and that was on a local network not accessible from the wifi. But eh, it was nice to keep that possibility around. Was also possible to print shit on their printers and all.

In this univ, they have different machine setups. Fedora instead of the previous Debian/Windows XP. Atleast we get a decent Firefox and not the crapped down Iceweasel that can't even handle Facebook. Oh and these machines have a nice selection of built-in games for when you're bored, too :)

The MAC address I used at the previous school doesn't work on this network, though. I didn't bother to try with a new MAC address because these machines also tend to have all the cables attached together tightly so it's not really possible to hijack an ethernet cable.

All the computers at my school have the same desktop background, and I used to open up the file in MSPaint and add lots of stuff to it (trollfaces etc), then go use some other computer nearby so I could see the reaction of the next person to use it.

Quality entertainment. :P

I used to be the only one with a different desktop wallpaper. I was able to change it through the Windows API, but that stopped working when they upgraded the computers from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Windows 8 oh god why would they do that to students

I much prefer the Fedora we use now, even if its interface is derpo.

We have Windows 7. It pretty much sucks because it's so limited. :/

On the school computers I have an entire folder dedicated to MS Paint abominations I have created in class. It is beautiful.

The school also has some iPads that are managed with a ton of configuration profiles and stuff (can't delete apps, no iCloud, no downloading apps, etc). However, we still manage to fuck around with them by putting all the apps in one folder or changing the wallpaper to something weird.

At any University in The Netherlands, you have to take your own Laptop, so no restrictions!
At least, on Computer-related Courses, it is.

Nobody cares about people carrying laptop at my school...why? Nobody brings their laptop. We have only like, 1 tech program at our school, and it doesn't even use computers.

lol, in my univ, they dont really care if you use the PC to play. The problem is...that they arent really good and they must be packed with tons of virus. They have a rollback feature too, so you cant permanently install stuff (or delete stuff like system32)

Also, previously, they used to block the students wifi from ganing access to some sites, like youtube and facebook, but you could bypass it.

But they finally came to their senses that people use facebook to share work stuff, and youtube videos to watch tutorials or subject related to your career.

You can bring your own laptop too, no restrictions. Its just that sometimes the internet doesnt work... >.>.

You can bring laptops here too, and it's fine in most courses. Wifi works okay in most places (if not, there's always my phone's wifi).

They don't try to block any sites either, which is pretty nice.

Very true, I remember how I had to help Students from Countries like Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia, etc., to clean up their Laptops, because literally 70% of their Laptops were packed with Viruses.
And the best thing is: They had no clue about those being Viruses, and they went to an ICT Course.

It's like that presentation I made about security a while ago. "Will future OSes be more secure?" With web integration, not sure... The only thing that really works is to educate users.

How many of them use the same shitty password everywhere out of laziness, happily run the shady 'downloaders', and all that junk?

It's like all those derpboards that got 'hacked'. Had they used Acmlmboard 1.92, Blargboard, ABXD, or even the most secure software you have, the end result would have been the same, because they have been giving power to unreliable people. So it's not just about software security.

Everyone having Windows 7 and blah. I'm so jealous, our school still uses Windows XP. And the computers are horrible too, being slow, high tendency to just freeze and whatnot. They have some supervision program installed and the teachers can even take control over your computer or block you out if you do shit. And I don't think one would be allowed to bring their own laptop for the informatics lessons either. Thankfully I'm allowed to use my own laptop for things such as arts lessons. That makes stuff so, so, so much easier for me, especially when we need to model something, though that wasn't the case so far this year.

I also remember how my classmates always asked me how you do this, that or the other last year because I was pretty much the only one with more experience on computers than my classmates, save for the teacher, but he never helped the students if the question was not exactly about the topic right now. Say, we talk about file formats (yes we do that at school because apparently there are people who don't know how they work) everything unrelated to file formats will be completely ignored. Great. I ended up telling them to leave me the fuck alone because I was getting annoyed by all those nonsense questions. Looks like I was the only one in class who grew up with computers and uses them for stuff other than games, oh well.

Teachers aren't always experienced either.

Once at middle school, they had a computer whose display was abnormally blueish. Teacher says he tried everything he could at software level, didn't do shit. I look... badly plugged VGA cable, red signal not getting through. Replug correctly, fixed.

Two years ago I had a teacher who had that problem. One side of the VGA cable was unscrewed so it was half-unplugged.

Same shit.

This teacher I mentioned was a derpass too. Once, we had to solder shit on circuit boards as part of the year's project. Teacher draws a schematic on the whiteboard and tells 'transistors go this way', rather than explaining how to properly mount them.

In the end, half the boards didn't work. Because for whatever reason, half the boards had been printed the wrong way around and needed transistors to be mounted the opposite from what the teacher said.

hah, polarization is a bitch isn't it? ;)

My teachers type slow as hell, too. Also, the digital boards and all that these days screw up a lot.

That reminds me, to how an ICT Teacher tried to fix a PC, that refused to boot up.
Then I came in, plugged the PC into the Wall Socket, and it worked.
The best part of it: His surprised face, like he would think like, "How the fuck did some random girl know, what the problem was?!".

Haha, competence at its best!

The middle school computer displays reminded me of another thing. This era was when LCD screens started to get popular. The school still had mostly 1024x768 CRTs. Two of the computers did get LCDs, though. The LCDs were 1280x1024, and none of these idiots ever considered setting the proper resolution in the system settings so it wouldn't look like shit.

Then high school and anything further was all-LCD. The demise of CRT was taking place.

Every single computer at my school is 1280x1024. I hate that resolution, so I'm always the one going around and setting every computer to 1280x960 so displayed stuff doesn't look horizontally stretched, but it always seems to revert back to 1024 after a few days. :(

Also, my parents both used CRT monitors until 2011 or so. asdf.
