They need lightning. Every course of them has light. I mean, thera are shadows and light effects. The problem is, we dont know how to set up the light. If we completely remove it, sometimes you dont know where a wall turns or not. Ninteno uses shadows for that... We only figured out this shit light.

The 'lights and shadows' Nintendo uses are done by dimming vertex colors. They did it this way in SM64DS, and I'm 90% sure they did it the same way in MKDS.

The only kind of dynamic light/shadows the DS supports is the lighting, and the vertical drop shadows (like the character shadow in SM64DS).

I'm 90% sure that Nintendo used static lighting (vertex colors) for the courses. Not to mention that the course lighting doesn't need to change, and dynamic lighting requires more processing power.

I know how to do it, but it is a little difficult to explain. Maybe a tutorial later on...

Edit: I used vertex colors in Peach Beach and Bowser Castle. And also in the new dino dino jungle.
