This is for people who want to start a Super Mario Galaxy hack.

Step 1- Brainstorm

This will allow you to think of level names, and more importantly; the hack name. Try typing (or writing) out designs for certain galaxies, and if you're talented, try to make some art. Give yourself a visual of what you want to see out of the hack. Also, you would want to think of music. Will you use original music? Already created music? This gives you the opportunity to ask for permission for tracks, so you aren't stuck later on.

Step 2- Assemble a team (Optional.)

If you aren't doing a solo project, you might want to get a team. But you don't just randomly say "HEY I WANT A TEAM" and accept anybody. You have to see examples of what they've done, or just set what you want to see. Don't have an overload of a certain category, try to keep it even. Don't have too much on a certain category, and don't have too little.
Here's a list of people you may need:
-Level Creators
-Management
-Designers
-Modelers/Texture hackers (Optional)
-Composers (Optional)

Step 3- Starting the creation process

Now, you've got your team set up, brainstormed ideas for your hack, now it's time to get started! You want to keep focused on a certain galaxy, rather than jumping around everywhere. Try to get the harder galaxies finished first, and such. Here's a little process you want to follow, if your hack uses custom models.

Create the model with placeholder textures, and create using those. And when the actual models are ready, you can just replace them and the level may be done by then.

This is how I order the creation of a level:

1) Import needed objects, models, and get collision issues resolved.
2) Look at the brainstormed design, revise, create.
3) Decide what NPCs will be in the level.
4) Do any needed texture hacks, and text edits.
5) Create the level, and test often. Jump around everywhere, try to do any possible thing to find bugs so your audience won't find them.

Remember, be original

It's fine to reuse some ideas sometimes in a hack, but don't just continuously do the same thing over and over again. It's horribly unoriginal and makes a game a bit boring to play, and therefore, will not be as good as you envisioned.

Another short thing, solo projects are mostly for people who can do a lot with SMG without having to ask everywhere for help, so you can mostly be on your own and creating some really good levels.

Even though there are only 3 real steps to getting into a hack, it's still time-consuming, and a big responsibility. It also requires a lot of dedication to finishing it. (note to self.)

If there is enough motivation and people wanting to get it done, and it goes smoothly, most likely your hack will be released to the public for everybody to enjoy.

If there are any questions, please ask them below. Thanks.
