I really like it! I think it has just the right tempo, and sounds all puzzling. NWP, anything slower wouldn't be Mario-ish.

The desert theme in PM:SS is a good example, even if the notes aren't very much, there's still background drums, or you could even use another melody in the background. Also, the main melody should be continuous, like that example is.
I do like it as a starting point though.
