I've hacked a lot of Mario Games before, but I'm getting an R4 card for my Nintendo DS, and I want to hack the character models in Super Mario 64 DS, and put my own custom character in the game over Mario or Yoshi or something, or at least texture edit the characters. But I have no idea how I'm supposed to edit the BMD models. I got a BMD importer for 3DS Max because I want to edit the 3D model of Yoshi in 3DS Max but I get an error about the Integers every time I try to import the Yoshi_model.BMD into 3DS max. So what I want to do is import this BMD into 3DS max so I can edit it and stuff, and then export it back to the same BMD format that Super Mario 64 DS uses, or at least edit it's textures, and put it back in the game over Yoshi using Tinke, and then play my custom character in the game. Does anyone know how to do that? If anyone does thanks, I could really use the help.

BMD? Use the exporter that's inside of the program. Use BMDView2 to export the model as .3ds. It would be way easier to use .3ds.

Psst, SM64DS's BMDs have nothing to do with SMG's. BMDview2 is useless in this case.

So, it's a different type of BMD? o.O

A format doc is linked somewhere in the stickies. You should really have read those before posting :P

Thanks for the tips, but is there any way to import the BMDs from Mario 64 into 3DS max or edit them in any other program?

You can use SM64DSe to export the models as OBJ models though importing them again will cause you to lose their animation. To edit their textures alone, open the editor and choose 3D Model>Import other model, select the character model you want to edit and choose 'Edit existing textures'. This lets you export and re-import all of the textures.

Thanks, I've got Super Mario 64 DS Editor Version 2 Beta 2, and it doesn't have Mario's, Wario's, Luigi's, or Yoshi's model, and I can't export 3D models in this version of it, but I think I'm using an older version of it. Is there a download link for the newest version of Super Mario 64 DS editor? :D

Download Rev. 54 (10/05/2013):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/sxwjcg

For later ones you have to build it yourself. You'll need Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition (free) or higher and TortoiseSVN or similar.

Select any level and choose 'Edit Level', select '3D Model' along the top and then 'Import other model'. You'll then have to browse for and select the character model you want. Player models are either in "/data/player/" or "/ARCHIVE/arc0.narc/data/player/".

Thanks, I found the model and I'm getting really close to importing the 3d model, but I only see "import model" there which can only import, and I don't see "import other model", though. P.S thanks again for the help

After you've selected the model you want to edit, click "Edit existing textures". You don't need to click "Import Model" if you're only editing the textures. "Import Model" is for when you're replacing the entire model with an imported one.

Thanks for the help with texture hacking :D P.s is there any way to export the player models (Wario, Luigi, Mario, Yoshi) as obj files like you can with the stages in SM64DSE?

Yeah you can use a program that opens those models and exports them, i might be wrong but maybe Gericom's MKDS editor might work (I've never used it though)

It does not export sm64ds models yet. It can view them though. I will try to implement that just like I did with nsbmd.

So i'm guessing you'd want to use NSMBD then.
