Hello, my name is Amy.

I'm a real-life composer, to an extent. I play the Violin, Viola, Flute, Guitar, Piano, Harp (Also to an extent), Drums and a few trumpets and related instruments. I've spent the majority of my life studying, playing, and creating my own music.

I've know about this project for awhile, and it seems lately that progress has picked up. I would love to help with composing, writing music, and whatever else may be involved with the process.

Apparently, it is required of me to make the music orchestrated. There is an issue with this, however, and this is the reason I've created this thread...

My experience is limited to actual instruments and paper, I've have 0 experience with these programs that are used to create virtual music.

I'm wondering, are there any tutorials, guides, anything that's geared towards this specific subject? Which programs are commonly used? I've purchased a program called FruityLoops, known as FL Studio. So far I've been able to write my pieces in MIDI, but I'm not sure how to make them sound like real instruments.

I'm a college student who majors in this subject, and I'd love to be able to orchestrate my music and offer my help to this project.

Any help would be loved, I'm eager to help out with this project and contribute with my professionally written music.

Can you record yourself playing your music with good-quality audio, with precise timing? If so, you could record yourself actually playing your (or someone else's) music one part at at time, then one of us could layer the recordings and add anything else needed for a full piece of music.

Yeah, if you can create good quality recordings and your music is good otherwise then you won't need these other programs to contribute. :)

But I have another question: Do you have access to a full orchestra? It would be even easier to make a good recording that way, instead of having to layer individual tracks together.

Mg3 people can't just have an orchestra in their pocket :P

Anyway it sounds like you know your stuff Amy. I hope we can find a way to get your talents in the game

Wow your very music talented if you can play all those intruments!
I hope you will get your help and I will be curious to hear some composion's  !

lol, well, I am a part of an orchestra, but I wouldn't be able to convince everyone to record a piece I made :D

Thank-you Goembario.

Agent000, I unfortunately do not possess the proper equipment which would be needed to record quality audio. I would have the borrow the equipment from the school, which is currently not within the realm is possibility.

I see learning how to do this as an essential skill, I'd love to be able to hear my own music done fully orchestrated, and have others enjoy it too through this project.

The school supplies any student working in music with a free copy of the program called FruityLoops, so that's what I'd like to use, unless something else is recommended.

Beyond MIDI sequences, I truly have no idea how to replace the electronic sounds with real or realistic intrument sounds, which is the only area of this that I seem to fail in.

Well, in your situation, you should probably use Fruity Loops. This thread should provide you with a good VST Soundfont to help get you started: https://kuribo64.net/?page=thread&id=429

There are tutorials on how to use FL Studio online, but you should ask Agent000 if you have any specific questions (he uses the program)

Well, I do have a specific question, how do you insert instrumental noises in place of electronic MIDI Noises?

One of my favorites I've heard would be that one called 'Green Grassland Galaxy', it's overall style and sound is top notch, close to that of a real orchestra. How is that done? How do you get those sounds working? That's pretty much what I'm missing here.

If anyone would be willing to guide me through specific steps, or atleast point out some obvious button that I'm missing, I'd be truly greatful. I've already layed out my pieces by playing what I can and writing a music sheet, trying to imagine how it will all soind together.

I really hope I can figure this out, it's something I've always wanted to do.

You would need a high quality soundfont. Blaz1222 (grassland composer) said his costs 500 dollars. But agent found a free version somewhere

Soundfont - You mean instrument samples? Where would I find these, and how would I install them properly?

I may be able to borrow some of the School's equipment if I let them know I'm recording sound samples for a personal project (Recording samples) that would be useful to others, I could use my own samples as well.

It was a promotional free version of software that would otherwise cost a couple hundred. It doesn't include all the instruments as Blaz's full version but it has quite a bit. Technically it's not available anymore but some searching around the internet helped ;)

@Gyro - whatever software you use, does it support vst plugins?

Agent000: I use FruityLoops. VST sounds familiar, so I'm pretty sure that it does.

Is it as simple as installing the plugin, do you have to manually map each sample to a beat, does it require anything beyond that?

Yeah soundfonts are instrument samples. Since this is Mario Galaxy we look for music with high quality samples (which is why we love blaz)

I'm not sure exactly how you'd use the sample I mentioned. I've installed sonatina on FL and and that required a vst plugin thingy, but for this I'm not sure

I use FL as well. It does support vst plugins. How much RAM does your computer have?

It's about 1 GB of RAM if I'm correct, I was planning on buying a new computer later this week if that's not good enough.

Agent000

If you're getting a new computer that's good. Go for a 64-bit OS, as that'll allow for 8GB RAM max rather than 32-bit's 4. I have 4GB and that's sometimes not even enough when I have a lot of tracks open of that plugin from the thread MG3 posted.

8 GB... Got it, can do.

There's still a few things I'd like some clarity on. What do I do after I install the plugin? Are the virtual instruments automatically swapped out with the real samples, or will this have to be done manually, and how so?

I also see that you mention how it's lacking in certain areas. I can record additional sound samples if needed, or get some elsewhere. How would I install those then?

Agent000
Posted on 06-20-13 09:27 PM Link | #26234
When you download it, it'll have an installer. I'm not sure whether you can set it to install it directly into FL Studio's plugin folder, so you might have to do it manually. Just read up on how to install a VST plugin to FL Studio.

When you create a new track, you go to the full plugin list (there might be a "More" option that you might have to open.) You might have to Refresh the plugin list for it to register the plugin. It'll appear in red as a new plugin when it is detected. Setting tracks to use that plugin will have them use those samples.

Alright, I'll try it out, sounds simple enough.

Thank-you so much, you have been beyond helpful, hopefully I'll be able to create some good pieces for this project.

May I contact you again if I run into any troubles? And again, thank-you. :D
