Gliding Canyon Level Design - Star 1, a design by MG3
Star 1: Soarin' through the Canyon Like Wild Glide and Fleet Glide Galaxy, this galaxy is all one large planet. Instead of the jungle or in a factory, this time Mario is in a desert-like area that is somewhat populated. The most prominent area Mario will be traveling is through a large canyon. There is a river at the bottom. One could infer that there will be a waterfall near the end. In that case, they are right. The background will be daytime, but will have some planets/stars too. The feel is a somewhat western desert, but the canyon is made of rocks. Lots of cactuses are present on the surface too. So the first star can be broken up into 4 parts: The descent into the canyon, the ride through the canyon itself (the longest part), a cavern that goes off-coarse from the 3 caverns (the shortest part), and the ending area, which has are huge waterfalls. Once you get into the canyon, the water will continuously flow to the waterfall. Even in the caverns. The caverns are there because a bunch of fallen rocks prevent Mario from going further in the canyon. The waterfall area (which the cavern comes out of) is basically a large lake that is surrounded by rock on every side. It is impossible to see past the rock, as it is above you. Mario lands on a wooden platform, similar to the ones in the past gliding galaxies. Jibberjay and Fluzzard are here yet again, and Jibberjay tells Mario "Welcome back! Its been a long time... and I see that you are looking for power stars. I know where one is - but Fluzzard is too scared to find it alone! If you glide with him, maybe he can overcome his phobia! Ready to go?" Mario hops on Fluzzard, and there is the optional tutorial. Mario goes. The canyon's start is just wide enough for Fluzzard to glide down upon without going too far to the side of the canyon. He gets a good view of all of the western/desert themed scenery to the side of the canyon, as he approaches. Once Mario gets inside the canyon, it seems like smooth sailing - but there are quite a few obstacles in the way. Some boulders start to roll off of the sides, resulting in Fluzzard having to dodge them. In addition, there are a few water spouts on the ground (I know there is a constant stream of water, but a water spout can still happen) that also provide obstacles. When Mario reaches the halfway point in the canyon, more rocks start falling. He starts finding Boulders stacked up, that provide walls. It is simple at first, but eventually it gets to the point where there are so many boulders, Fluzzard has to fly through the right hole (there are a few, and a couple of tricky ones contain a 1-up Mushroom). More boulders fall in addition to the stacked up ones. Mario reaches the end of the canyon and is faced with a 3-way choice. The canyon's boulders have really stacked up now, making it impossible to go any further. But there are 3 holes in the canyon - each of them are caverns. There is one to the North (same direction as the cavern) That has Mario going through the rocks and then under them, making him go underground the canyon and then taking a left), one to the West (the easiest of the paths to cross), and one to the Northwest (just to the left of the rocks). The North one (the one going through the rocks) is the hardest one. The West one is the easiest. The Northwest one has moderate difficulty. The West cavern is simple. It is a cavern made of rock, and the terrain doesn't mess with you too much. There are some sharp rocks and turns needed to make, but they aren't that hard to navigate. The cavern has decent lighting. The NorthWest cavern is the darkest one, but once again, isn't that hard to navigate. There are less obsticles, but more turns needed to be made, as the lake is directly West of the canyon. The challenge lies with the lighting and knowing when to make the turns. The North path goes directly through a bunch of rocks, so the space is rather cramped. The lighting is fine, but there are many turns, and many sharp rock edges. The smallest mistake will damage/kill you. This path has the most turns as well, as it needs to go from North to West. The comet coin is directly in front of the end of this path, rewarding you for your trouble. Each of the caverns go in a jagged manner. sort of like irregular squigly lines. The North one is the craziest, and it has the biggest rotation to make as well to get to the lake. All 3 tunnels come out to the same area - the lake. The caverns are holes in the side of the massive circumfrence of the tall stone wall of the lake. At each end of the cavern, there is a waterfall. At the end of the lake is the ring, and there is a power star right there. The mission has been completed. More details about the way the modeling should happen follow. I will do a drawing on this galaxy, but I will point out, while the caverns will be jagged, the canyon's basic design won't be. It will be smooth and elegant. All of the falling boulders/rocks will be jagged and look sharp, making you want to avoid hitting them. The geysers will vary in size and timing. Some may come up right in front of you, while others will come up further ahead. I will show how everything will be mapped on the drawing. And this is only Star 1. If you guys have a better name for the mission, please let me know:3 EDIT: In the main bulk of the canyon, pillars will be obstacles. Later on, they will collapse too, adding challenge. At the very end where the tunnels are, the third tunnel (the hardest one) will be surrounded by collapsed pillars instead of fallen boulders. EDIT 2: 2 rivers will flow into the canyon, and there will be trees near the rivers. The Cacti will be outside the canyon walls. All will be revealed in my drawing... ____________________

Well your design is considerably more detailed than mc's, which is good. I kinda like it a bit more as well, though the difficulty could be toned down a bit. ____________________ |AgentSplaturn| if someone uses an external hard disk to store porn on |AgentSplaturn| is it their sex drive? Glad you like it! I may have overexaggerated the amount of boulders. But I can make adjustments once I get to drawing this galaxy. I'm glad this turned out to be a success. ____________________

The boulders could be located in wide areas of the canyon, to make it easier to dodge them. ____________________ Super Mario LOLand Thanks to kaj for helping to port my Acmlmboard 2.5 layout to Acmlmboard 2.064! |

that will work. Or I could just make them slower. Velocity is just as important as Displacement. ____________________

Tbh I don't think we should use this. I've literally had my design pictured for months, and if I learn to model I can do my design as pictured. I can give it more detail; I just wanted to give a general idea for now |

I've had this in my head for months too. Your design isn't bad, it just needs more detail. And nothing is stopping you from modeling mine if it gets approved. I will do a drawing probably tomorrow so you can see. ____________________

The reason mine is undetailed is to let you guys help me fill the detail. I think it needs a chance |

it does have a chance. I'm not saying mine should get approved right away. I'm just saying the general concept of mine is better IMO. But yours isn't bad. If Glem/Cosmo likes one of ours better, they will approve it. If they don't like either, maybe we could work together and collab. ____________________

Remember that instead of boulder stacks, there could be pillars and a couple of them could topple over like the giant machinery in Fleet Glide. ____________________ Super Mario LOLand Thanks to kaj for helping to port my Acmlmboard 2.5 layout to Acmlmboard 2.064! |

Erm.
Nice design mg3! Just one thing, boulders stacked up to half the height of the Grand Canyon would look horrible. As Fluzzard will keep slowly dropping, a few simple rock formations (e.g. a lopsided arch, a piece jutting out, a couple tall pillars, etc.) Actually, perhaps you could just cut the North route. Small gaps between the stuff I just mentioned would create a hard optional route too. I mentioned an idea in the old thread: A series of toppling pillars of rocks that will block the way and kill Mario unless he boosts through some boost rings. Perhaps in the tunnels. And mc, could you elaborate on what you were thinking of? As it is, mg3's design is better (more detailed) but really isn't too different from yours. ____________________ Burrow Base design- Text complete. Do boost rings actually affect Fluzzard? I have only seen them underwater. ____________________ Super Mario LOLand Thanks to kaj for helping to port my Acmlmboard 2.5 layout to Acmlmboard 2.064! |

Look, I need you guys to trust me. I have my design in my head and it works. I understand Mg3 has more detail, and maybe I could include some of his features, but I've been set on this for a long time. I haven't decided details yet, which is why I posted mine, but it WORKS.

Erm, well, it wasn't very helpful.
Seriously, unless what you're thinking of is very different, you guys might as well merge them, because they both seem pretty similar. ____________________ Burrow Base design- Text complete. MC, what type of environment were you thinking of in your design? (ie desert, jungle) ____________________

Canyon, desert, but with life, showing that there's stuff going on everywhere, even in the middle of nowhere. with life being trees and water and such, possibly some birds for effect once we can import jointed models and animate better. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

I dont think there should be trees. just cactuses. there should be life, but it will be implied by the surrounding town of the canyon. ____________________
