well, for the past... two+ weeks? i've been working on a site to display video game textboxes in your browser. i love text systems in video games, and i thought this would be a fun project. every textbox has a description under it to explain where in the game the textbox is found, continuous conversations are enclosed in a black border, and there are a few sorting options at the top of the page.

everything is displayed in vw (so, sorry to people with ultrawide monitors) but i plan to add a zoom feature to fix that. i also plan to be able to link directly to specific textboxes/conversations, but for right now you just kinda have to scroll through the whole thing.

i wanted to do it because of browsing the text files in Wii Fit/Plus/U, but then someone told me that no one would use the site if that was the only game on there. so i thought Super Paper Mario could be the first game i add to the site. but then i accidentally did Super Mario Galaxy 2 instead. oops.

so, right now, it's just got some text from the USA English version of SMG2. not everything is perfect, but a lot of it is on the right track. there's a lot of text files i have to go through but i seem to be making good progress. SMG2 has a [character] tag that gets replaced with the name of either Mario or Luigi, depending on who the player is playing as right now, and there's a small dropdown box for that at the top of the page to emulate this. by default it's Mario, but by selecting Luigi, all the [character] tags will be replaced with "Luigi", instead.

also, there's a bit of JavaScript, and i know how people don't like JavaScript here, but i was told by the person who added it that i couldn't get the features i wanted without it. sorrs ;p

here's some screenshots of what it looks like so far:

not everything is fully 100% perfect, of course. but i think this could be a really helpful resource for quoting various video games. i've been told the Zelda games would be especially useful, but i wanted to start with something i'm a bit more familiar with first.

there's also a few... issues, with the site currently. (see spoilered image, for example.) but honestly... i don't know how to code. not in any language, including HTML. i got pretty far without any previous experience, though. only had to ask for help a couple times haha. so, if this project interests you, and you know how to fix the really annoying stuff that i can't find a solution for myself, feel free to fix it - everything is on GitHub. (not that the reason i made this post was so i could get people to code for me, of course. i'm sure with enough Google searching and hair pulling, i'll get them all eventually, heh.)

anyways, enjoy :)

i've updated Peruse to add all text up until the first Hungry Luma on the World Map. more importantly, though, i've added links to every textbox (pretty similarly to how Kuribo64 does it, really) by clicking the + icon under a textbox. so now, you can be having a conversation with your friend about how Yoshi sometimes calls himself "Yoshi the space dragon", and can just directly link to it, rather than having to take a screenshot. or, you can just share the name of it: #HoleSphere3Zone-SignBoard004

for SMG2, the names of the textboxes/conversations are based on their internal filenames, so this should hopefully also make the site useful to modders, too. take #HoleSphere3Zone-SignBoard004 for example. it's located in HoleSphere3Zone.msbt, and the text label is SignBoard004. and if it's part of a conversation, there will be another number added at the end to show where in the conversation that textbox is placed at (which are separated by [newpage] tags, by the way).

also, added a (user entry) textbox at the top of the page to change the price Hungry Lumas ask for, since that's just a variable. so users can change what this value reads as on the site display, and it should update live.
