You don't need $100's worth of software in order to run Java apps on OS X. You can do it for free with VirtualBox (VB) and Ubuntu. Just download and install VB, create a new virtual machine, and install Ubuntu or other varieties of linux you like on the Virtual Machine you created with VB. This works with Parallels too; and I recommend Parallels if you want to go full screen and have a "native install" like experience.

Well, thats a good idea. Virtual machines are great. Thung is, they use a lot of performance, buts i guess thats ok for a mac.

...Umm, since when do you have to pay to run Java apps?

That's why I recommend using a VM (Virtual Machine) with Linux if you have a older computer. If you've got a newer computer, then running Windows in a VM is fine. The iMac comes with 8GB of RAM. It's upgradable to 16GB (21.5") or 32GB (27") of RAM.

You don't actually have to pay. Just use VirtualBox for free. I only reason recommended buying Parallels if you plan to also install Windows 8, as Parallels has excellent Windows 8 support compared to VirtualBox. *cough* os x full screen support *cough*

From what I tried with VirtualBox (running on Linux), Windows 8 works just fine.

Or, theres an easier way to all this. Timehacker, go back in time and stop apple from existing. We wouldnt have to lead with os x anymore.

LOL. In seriousness though; even if I were able to go back in time, I believe that the minute you step foot in the past, a new timeline is created; thus preventing any changes to the current timeline.

I believe that the past can't be changed, and anything you do in the past always happened anyway.

I know this is old and all but it kinda peaked my interest.
I read on and wow, you obviously didn't find this: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_install.xml

That's a free installer. The only downside is that due to Google (this is Google's fault btw) not having a 64 bit chrome on mac (which I believe by now this is fixed) Java won't work in Chrome. But I believe Chrome has 64 bit builds.

But kudos to apple for ditching 32 bit.

Apple ditching 32 bit. They don't deserve kudos for that. To me it sounds a logical decision :p

I think they do indeed deserve it, afaik they're the first major OS to use 64 bit only which is a huge step forward. Microsoft still supporting 32 bit is going to be somewhat deadly in the long run. That and it adds EVEN MORE gigs onto the already huge Windows installation.
