It's official, the Wii U can finally be worked on for hacking, and apparently the ~25GB disc rumors are true. Have fun storing a ton of games on your hard drive guys :3

That was amazingly fast. And wow. 23GB?! That's like, ~6 times the size of Wii isos...

Also, I wonder how long it'll take for them to make an emulator...

Remember backed in late November Miiverse was accudentl hacked and another guy on that same NeoGAF thread said that he accidently hacked the GamePad?

Fahnahlly! 'Bout time! I'm sure an editir for the upcoming 3D Mario will be made shortly after the game comes out, like with SMG2 and Anarchy in The Galaxy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dolphin is updated for Wii U.

Another thing: Have any Wii U games actually been hacked? Like is there any talk about a hack for Lego City: Undercover or Nintendo Land for example?

No, you can't even edit the system yet. All it is is that the WiiKey team have made a modchip that lets you run content, but there is no content to run, all they've done is dump 1 game. Don't get your hopes up, this is still gonna take many more months to be practical. However, I'd be willing to bet that, even though it will ALSO take a long time, they'll have Dolphin working before the actual Wii U is able to be somewhat useable.

Sorry for the bump, but is there any free software that'll let me backup wii u games? (probably unlikely) If someone knows something, that would be great!

Considering we don't even have access to running custom code on the wii u, we literally have one ISO which is the avengers game in PAL. THAT'S IT. It's literally impossible right now to do anything with teh wii u.

Nice start!

Can't wait to see the Homebrew Channel in HD. And the inevitable SM3DW hacking board.
Status: It was really, really fun, guys - thanks for the ride!

Homebrew Channel in HD.

Good luck waiting for that, based on what MN1 and I have been discussing. It's impossible to create custom channels unless you modify CafeOS, and even then that isn't permanent. You can MAKE it permanent, but it would be FAR easier to just use the web browser.

Anything that makes you pay is fake, especially if there is literally nothing for it to play

It actually should be possible to install new channels onto the filesystem and have them launched by the System Menu. According to comex, the binaries are similar to ELF, and this guy has already started figuring out the format. Even better than this, the SDK is stored on the filesystem, so a homebrew SDK is readily available.

Are you shitting me? They're really THAT stupid? xD That's ridiculous. I guess they just assumed that we'd never get this far.
Well, hopefully we get into the black box (sometimes literally) soon.

It may be somewhat harder than just writing to the filesystem, though. On the Wii, game discs were sandboxed so that they could only access their own data on the NAND. I'd expect this to be true of applications like the web browser, so we might need a Cafe OS exploit to install channels. However, comex was apparently able to read Cafe OS off the filesystem from the web browser, so there may not be that restriction.

Well even if we don't get a channel, nintendo can't stop us via the web browser, because even if they patch all the bugs or update, there are still more. So auto updates can't do shit xD

Well, I just managed to dump the Espresso Boot ROM, with NWPlayer123 testing the dumper code on his Wii U. If anyone wants it, you can get it [REDACTED]. I verified the SHA1 hash of it against the blog post by fail0verflow after 8 days, and it works. The next step is reversing it to figure out how the OTP works. Then I can use the HRESET attack to dump the keys.
