Humongous Fungus Galaxy

Star 1: Deep in the Fungus Forest

A Design by MoreCowbell

So you've just come out of the baffling Riddle Ruins, and are hoping for an easier, simpler galaxy on your next mission. Well, it turns out that the SMG2.5 team has screwed you over, because Welcome to Humongous Fungus Galaxy! Now, this galaxy isn't meant to be an evil trip of frustration. However, this will remind you that you're in world 7 for sure.

Unlike most other galaxies, Humongous Fungus doesn't visually have definite planets. The entire galaxy is on a sea of poison swamp that goes as far as the eye can see. Now, there will still be "planets", but they aren't floating in space. When you take a launch star, it takes you to a separate area that is still in the sea (There will be giant mushrooms in between each section to give a forest feel, and also to keep the area between each section non-empty loking). Obviously the main theme of this galaxy is giant mushrooms everywhere, and Mario will have to travel through a large forest of them to reach his goal.

Planet 1:

When Mario lands, he will immedietly be immersed in the forest, and will be surrounded by giant mushrooms similar to trees in our world. Since there is poison everywhere, Mario can't just walk through the forest. He has to use obstacles as "bridges" that lead from tree to tree. Sometimes there will be small huts, sometimes there will be logs, rocks, actual bridges, etc. that Mario needs to use in order to continue his journey. After going from mushroom about 3 or 4 times, Mario will reach the launch star at the end. This will take him to Planet 2.

Planet 2

Planet 2 of this mission is literally an extremely large mushroom. While it will be surrounded by other smaller ones (the same size as the ones before), the big mushroom will be the only accessed part of this planet. Mario lands at the bottom of this behemoth, and picks up a Spring Mushroom while he's down there. This is where the galaxy really starts to pick up in difficulty. Using the spring mushroom, Mario must bounce from platform to platform in order to climb up the mushroom. The platforms for the most part will be little smaller fungi attached to the large one.

However, some other types of platforms may appear. What makes this section so tricky is that spring Mario is very difficult to control. In fact, it will be even harder this time because like the beginning of Tall Trunk, Mario will be going around the mushroom's circumference. Once the player accomplishes this task of jumping, the launch star will be reached right underneath the umbrella-like part of the mushroom. Now off to the third and final Planet 3. (Cue dramatic sound effect)

Planet 3 You're fucked

Now time for the final challenge of the mission, which is most likely going to be the most difficult. You land on a big mushroom, and notice that ones here seem to look more like what you would see in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

On the mushroom you've just landed on is a sign post. He says "Hey! Skill Board here, and trust me, you'll need a lot of skill here if you wanna pass! See all the different colors of each mushroom? Pay careful attention! The red ones will burn you, the yellow ones will shock you, and the white ones will just disappear! You want to step ONLY on the purple ones, you hear? Those are safe. Any others will give you trouble."

So, now you know are only to step on the purple mushrooms if you want to survive. Thankfully the launch star took your spring power, so control won't be as bad. However, there is something that adds that lost difficulty back in. This planet uses the flashback gimmick from SMG2! When you landed here the music changed to the beat block theme, and on the beat, everything goes black. You'll have to use your memory to get from mushroom to mushroom safely. Now, of course, you can just take your time and wait, right?

...

WRONG

Guess who's back guys! You got it, Slim Shady the cosmic clones are at it again to make certain Mario's demise. They'll make sure you rush to reach the other side. By the way, the mushrooms here are set up in more of a circular fashion, but while that means there are multiple routes from each mushroom, you must keep in mind that many of them are deadly mushrooms. If Mario can reach the other side of this "circle", he'll get a star!

That's a big if.

Side note: This forest will be inhabited by whittles, who will stand in places such as huts or on small mushrooms. They'll tell Mario in their broken English to "Jump far" and stuff like that.

I know that this design has little detail of where everything is, but I'll have all that included when I make the art. Besides that though, I think it came out pretty well, and I'd love to see some feedback from you guys!

That last planet... sounds pretty beast difficult.

I love it.

Meh. I was thinking of also having a spherical planet with giant mushrooms sticking out of it.

Unfortunately no because like I said this isn't supposed to be in space like other galaxies

Great design! Planet 3 made me LOL. The side of the circle should have a large purple mushroom with the Star in a crystal. The ol' Cosmic Clones will be spinning the crystal 8-).

For Planet 3, I don't like the Flash-Black idea. It felt forced in SMG2 and IMO should be scrapped. But Planet 3 can still be hard - we could just make it a long jump challenge! Or we could mess with the camera and force a vertical perspective (like SM3DL w/o the 3D). Now THAT would be hard.

I completely disagree with that. Overruled :3

Why? It felt forced and tedious. The depth camera idea would be more fun. And if you could level the mushrooms at different heights depending on their color, it would make the level completely possible. What I mean is that you start by seeing all the mushrooms, to see the heights and colors. You get 5 seconds to memorize it, and you are off. The camera will then be face down, so you can't see the depth of each mushroom. You can only go by the colors. Tricky and fun.

I'm keeping the flashback. It's the main part of the challenge. It's not changing

I guess, but either way, FlashBlack felt like one of the more forced ideas in SMG2.

Me too! It seems very cool and I loved FlashBlack Galaxy myself. Also, planet 3 is EPIC with its hardness :3

I'm considering editing star two by taking out the flashback (In that star only). There are multiple reasons for this:

1. Music- I'm a huge fan of the purple coins theme, and I'd hate to have to see it go because of the flashback (which uses the beat block theme), especially in the hardest purple coin challenge in the game.
2. It just seems impossible. I want it to be challenging, and in star 1, the flashback fits. But imagine having the galaxy, along with the purple coins, disappear while being chased by cosmic clones. It just doesn't seem reasonable. Of course, we can try it then decide to take it out if it's impossible, but I also want to see your opinions on the matter.

You shouldn't use flashback in this star. The purple coin theme for the LAST purple coin challenge MUST be in there.

The Starting Maze Planet in Boo Moon features a light around Mario. Maybr that could work in the Purple Coin mission.

So could the unexpected glowing effect from the fog in Star 2 of the demo, but I doubt we should use it altogether. I mean, you're STILL trying to find purple coins under a time limit along with watching where you step. It will be chaos either way.

Don't forget the cosmic clones

The glowing affect is more or less equal to the light-dark effect. At least that is how I see it. But the light-dark effect would work better because you can still see the Cosmic Clones and you can get a preview of the mushrooms before you even start to jump on them. The glowing effect hides the Cosmic Clones and you can't see the mushrooms until you are over them.
