It's art, not are. Anyways, here's all the ideas.
I think this galaxy needs an ominous feel to it. Not outright creepy or scary but the weird "something isn't right here" feel, as one sometimes gets in dreams. It would be nice of someone to make a 3D model or concept art of Peach's castle for star 1 and I will work on the intense platforming challenge myself.

People have been suggesting a lot of M.C. Escher's work in the level design thread, so here are some of my favorites that could be drawn from:

And another idea: Escher was also famous for his tessellations - patterns of one or two shapes that fit together perfectly:

It would be pretty awesome if we had a Mario-themed tessellation as the background for the galaxy!

I was thinking to use the Arbiter's Grounds Dungeon from Twilight Princess or something similar to it, or just edited and tweaked a little. I remember in the dungeon, there were altars that needed to be ignited, so Fire Mario would really work with this. Plus, there were also many sections of quicksand, so its really good. Here are some pics:

not bad, but a better choice might be adding elements of earth temple from skyward sword, no hate though, it could totally work great idea :) .

The Earth Temple was fire-themed, and we aren't really going for that here.

I actually might try to make some kind of concept art for this galaxy, but I won't be able to post it for another week ;~;

Make it as wierd and confusing as possible. Take inspiration from Escher, maybe.

Escher was already suggested in the second post.. still a good idea, though.

Edit: apparently I lost wings and now have a mask instead :(

It would be great to have one half of the level be completely underground in a temple, exactly like NSK's pics of Arbiter's Grounds, except with many traps, like a retextured Ledge Hammer, a hidden Thwomp with only a dip in the ground hinting at its prescence, one of those Clockwork Ruins giant rolling stone-platforms coming down a narrow hallway...
Dead ends that don't look like a dead end, and correct paths that look like a dead end. It should be unnervingly monotonous, but with hidden dangers emerging everywhere.
It should be a labyrinth, designed to lead Mario past all the traps, with many dead ends but only ever one correct path.

Edit: AwesomeAddict, please read the thread before posting. The whole point of the galaxy is to be weird and confusing, and Escher was mentioned quite a few times in the summary post.

How would the Rhomps work? Don't they roll infinitely?

And would they stop at the end of the path and start rolling the opposite direction?

He didn't mean Rhomps, he meant the rolling stones that have wedges in them you can hide under. In the final Clockwork Ruins planet.

Oh, those things. I didn't think that the paths would be that big...

I do not know if that possible in-game but that would be a really bizarre.

Sadly, it's not in terms of geometry. It would be really awesome, but I doubt it.

It's possible if we keep the camera stationary. Just look at 3D land. We could put one of those eye platforms where you need to stand to rotate the camera properly.

Oh yeah, I forgot about SM3DL doing that.

Those structures of SM3DL in the spoiler above can be recreated for this galaxy. (Maybe even create our own optical illusions for this galaxy!)

The reason why I thought the Arbiter's Ground pics really fit this galaxy, is because if tunnels like them were used to make a deadly boobytrapped maze underground, shift the gravity a bit, and the player won't even notice because they're so similar.

Optical illusions, like a row of torches, all except one normal sized and evenly spaced, except the last one, which is enlarged and placed a lot further so that it looks exactly the same at the beginning of the corridor. With a mostly hidden Thwomp in the space between.

There are many ways we could go with this galaxy, but I think it would be really neat if the entire galaxy looked hand-drawn like an M.C. Escher drawing... of course, we'd need some really great artists in order to do that... but if we could pull it off, it'll look great!

So should this galaxy be an deadly underground 3D labyrinth, with:
-Ambushes, and traps. I can think of quite a few. :P
-Gravity shifting. e.g. a hallway stops at a wall and continues up a wall. That can make the "3D" labyrinth.
-Illusions -like weird looking walls with no collision -"corridors" that are dead ends and "dead ends" that are corridors. >:)

It could only be a big half of the galaxy. The rest could take place aboveground, on a reality warped surface.

Well cosmological already has plans to design this galaxy at some point, and from what he explained to me, it could be really cool
