I actually think that they should be in the level. Maybe having a corridor where a Tox Box repeatedly goes back and forth?

Well, they could fit in a labyrinth. If cosmo decides to include an underground "mind-screw" labyrinth with evil traps, optical illusions and fake outs as part of the level.
Like, *turns a corner* HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-
*suspicious dent in floor* *Thwomp above*
*falls down a pit trap* *gravity switches and a whole new section of the maze*

To stop the player from being trapped in it forever, it would LOOK like an endless maze, but it would be an actual labyrinth (there's a difference), but the paths only keep splitting, dead-ending quickly or rejoining, never doubling back. Like, path splits into two, the paths eventually rejoin.

I thought this galaxy was not going to have any fakes that are traps. The seemingly endless maze does sound like a good idea because that is an illusion.

If we're going for an underground labyrinth as part of the level, we could actually recreate something like the picture above with gravity. Mind-screw.
Perhaps a wide open room with absolutely nothing in it, just to make players paranoid. :3
Or an endless loop of staircases and corridors (but with a landmark to make it obvious it's looping).
Much as an evil labyrinth would be amusing, we can't make it TOO hard to navigate.
Traps would provide the difficulty.

Part of the underground labyrinth may as well have a ring-shaped tunnel and/or winding and curving tunnels to give the illusion of a ring, with mind bending optical illusions in the tunnels as well.

I also suggested earlier on this thread to have Tox Boxes. In my opinion, Tox Boxes would fit the lsbyrinth well, as gc said.

We were thinking this would be the central "hub" within the level, with different doors and archways leading to puzzle rooms. Once you solve the puzzles you get silver stars, and the final star forms in the center of the Escher room.

What I don't understand is how this relates to ruins and temples, which is the main part of the galaxy.

I'm very against the idea of using outside models...

They need to be made for a Mario game, and it needs to have a design before hand. Using other models will make the game messy

People's reactions to the Escher model will not be "that looks messy." They'll think "oh cool, that's a clever reference, especially in the context of a Galaxy game."

Though NWP does bring up a valid point. Maybe this should go in Paper Caper?

Remember that the actual models and textures could make it look like ruins. Take in comparison the first and second missions of Flipsville Galaxy.

That is also a good idea and one of the possible concepts for this galaxy. Some 3D areas gave the camera restricted to certain angles, which all we need to make optical illusions like in SM3DL.

Er... no. I always intended this galaxy to be hand drawn and escher/illusion based. I don't know what theme you guys thought it was... The Escher drawing this model was based on was the direct inspiration for this galaxy.
