This is a continuation to the thread about the DSLites (search it. I'm lazy.). There might be some fun electronics adventures in here.


First thing I want to do is make my new life a bit more convenient.


My room is like this: (incomplete)



I installed a LED color light thing I had, on the bookshelf. It's the only place where I can place it without using tape or whatever, and have it look nice.

Except the controller for that thing has to be in the bookshelf, the cord is ridiculously short.

I want it to be closer to the bed so I don't have to feel my way to the bed after turning the lights off.


My soldering iron stayed in the shithole. I ordered better equipment instead -- soldering iron with multiple tips, holder thing with magnifying glass, etc... for about 30€.

I also ordered shit to build an extension cord for the LED controller. It uses a standard 5-pin connector which is easy enough to find.

So far:

* length of 5-wire cable
* 5-pin connectors, male and female
* that insulation thing that shrinks when you heat it

About the same price as the soldering iron.


You'll learn more about this whenever I receive all that hardware.

ok. got the hardware this morning, so here we go.




5-wire cable. shrink insulator. 5-pin connectors.




The connector on the controller. Blurry because herpderp phone, but you can see the 5-pin layout.




After a while, getting the wires in the connectors. The black tape on the male connector is added to make sure no pins get shorted, even if they're already spaced enough. (to be honest, the solder job there is ugly, but it does the job)

For the male connector, the wires were soldered to the pins on it. This kind of connector is designed to be placed on a PCB. Soldering the wires to the pins proved to be tricky.

For the female connector, it uses metal pins that receive the wires and are then inserted into the plastic part, easy enough and relatively clean.


Now, time to finish it...

Easy, just shrink the insulator and you're done!



... yeah.

Fuck that shit.

Good ol' duct tape does the job very well.





Well, there. For some reason it shat itself on the first tries, but now it works fine.
