I'm assuming it has to be the game trying to make sense of the collision that's going on.

maybe there are versions of the game that don't exhibit the glitch. It's common for DS games to have multiple release versions, some with bugfixes. SM64DS is a prime example.

It was patched.

I wonder what line of code is the offender for this strange glitch.

'easy'.

grab the VC release of the game, extract the DS ROM, diff it against the closest DS release.

In Brawl I've seen the game crash by just selecting "no" when you're quitting the subspace emissary. (the prompt was to save)

In Yoshi's Island once my game crashed just because I accidentally used a powerup in the pause menu. This might just be my SNES being old but I'd figure I'd bring it up anyway.

In the original Smash bros. (64), it's possible to crash the game by getting Ness's PK Thunker move to get stuck between two Fox's that are blocking. This is really hard to do without other people tho.

Occasional bugs are something that can happen in every game though, for a variety of reasons.

Back when we were kids, we would play games on the family computer. The computer had a bunch of issues, likely caused by its bad BIOS. Anyway, it wasn't rare to see games crash or close for no reason.

Once, I witnessed a particularly amusing glitch in Rayman 2, in the Iron Mountains. Happened in that level part where you control a flying ship to allow Globox's children to escape the mines they're stuck in. Normally, you start the level on a wooden platform bridge thing, and the ship is waiting for you mid-air. The glitch caused Rayman and the ship to swap positions. So while Rayman was stuck mid-air, the ship was laying on the platform.

The glitch required restarting the game, but nethertheless, it was amusing. No idea if there's a specific way to cause it, though -- it seemed to be the one bug that happens one time out of 1000 for whatever reason.

I've never had Brawl crash on me out of the blue, but I can make it just by placing all the Mother/Earthbound stickers in a certain order and taking a picture.

But the Scribblenauts series is beyond glitchy, like on the second game using a pregnant potion on a starite will crash if you try to collect it or the baby afterwards.

The sad thing is that it probably works across all the games (Except the first one) as it just seems that they copy and pasted their code across all versions they made.

A specific blue coin in Noki Bay will crash Super Mario Sunshine whenever the player attempts to collect it. For some reason, this doesn't happen on the first level.

Strangely, that's never happened to me. Maybe it has to do with people grabbing a ledge right as they get the blue coin or something.

The actual code/filesystem may well be the same. Just the container and emulator are different. The bugfix may be a on-the-go or runtime patch by the emulator, or just a side effect of the emulator not being entirely accurate.

side effect would be plausible, on-the-go patch less so (why not ship an already-patched ROM?). either way, the only way to find out is to look into it.

Spore crashes if you attempt to scale any part of a branch in the Flora Editor, but only on 99% of computers. Oddly this doesn't happen if you use a hand or foot from the Creature Editor to scale a branch joint, but that's kind of a pain.

Then again, the Flora Editor is unused and can only be accessed via command-line options, so I guess that shouldn't really come as a surprise.

If you mess up uploading a wad for the wii's wad manager, the whole wii crashes! And the wii breaks! Double Wammie!

Derp indeed, derp indeed. But hey, if I brick my Wii, it can be used to build a house in a developing country!
