Ratings are everything. Controversy is just resources for making money and a means of advertisers to encourage adnate consumers to purchase nugacious smart objects.

It's also another reason I don't watch TV.

Same reason here why I don't watch TV. There's just too many ads, firstly, and I could watch those programs on another device as well, like a tablet, and it is portable. And almost all of the ads are quite stupid anyway and not worth my time.

so basically half the reason why people don't watch TV is because they're too impatient to sit through commercials.

you're doing it wrong. ads are designed for you to take a pee break or get a snack. :P

well, regardless of ads, TV is 90% garbage.

Cable in general is garbage. I really hope it completely dies off soon.

I also don't find the content shown in news to be worthwhile and engaging. It's usually just a few minutes of it. If I were to consume news, I'd probably do it via articles and maybe NPR, but I don't listen to radio.

Oh yeah, NPR news via the Fire TV. Alexa (Echo) just speaks and you can listen to it and do something else.

Otherwise, I get most of my news content from newspapers and people around me. I don'tlisten to radio either.

consuming news is the best way to get depressed

see, for example, Kuribo64 News:

"bomb exploded in Crapistan and killed 25"
"Trump beat kids to death after raping them"
"incredible newsflash: kids actually go blind from computer abuse"
"pollution reaches peaks in the city of RVLution"
"obesity epidemic: more than 100% of kids are obese"
"house collapses, kills old fart who lived inside. wait, noone cares."
"LIVE FOOTAGE Kremlin on fire!"

man, I should totally run a news channel

Oh yeah, you needed a job. You're super good at making funny news titles, so I also think you'd do well at a news station.

And yep, pure evidence that once again news tends to always look towards the negative, all of the titles there were negative, so yep, depression. If only news would look towards the more positive side, then it would create less depression for the people that read it.

but positive news make less audience -- noone cares if you say that everything is good. People want drama.

The news should be educating people on issues and current events, which often end up depressing by their nature. There is a negativity bias, which is a problem, but it shouldn't be solved with a positivity bias. Report the facts without caring about how it makes people feel.

Sadly, news organizations can't do this, since their goal is to make money rather than serve the public interest. Media being for profit is a big problem, since it leads to sensationalism and political bias. Though having a government-funded media has its own issues, since it may become dependent on pleasing the people in power to avoid losing its funding.

Indeed. This is especially troublesome with science-based issues. The media don't really look at science results and report just part of the story. It happens a lot, that what articles say is quite different from what the actual experiment is. Take how processed meats recently were confirmed as a Group 1 carcinogen. Headlines were then screaming "Eating Meat Just as Bad As Smoking". Except these categories are based on the relationship, not on how likely one causes the other. A Group 1 categorization means that processed meat can cause cancer, but it doesn't mean it increases the cancer risk as much a smoking does.

This is going the exact same way as air pollution and global warming.

The news of IoT security issues have made it to the idiots. The idiots blindly swallow anything you give them, without further research or thinking. The system makes up ways of reassuring the idiots (making them think they're safe) while extracting more money from them.

Meet the smart firewall.

They slapped a software firewall on a sleek, iPhoney dildo, and trick the idiots into buying it. The idiots buy it and think it magically makes them safe from all cyber attacks. The idiots aren't safe, but the market is... for now.

Suggestion: make a green version of it and sell it twice the regular price with some ecology babble. The idiots will also think they're helping the planet, double win!

Remember: no amount of firewalls can keep you safe if you're an idiot. Proper security relies on, you know, educating the users.

Ohhh, so that's what a dildo looks like

Random comment aside, just look at the Amazon comments. This one struck me in particular.

Conceptually this will not do much, if anything, to protect your home network, devices, or data. Think about it... How could routing ALL of your internet traffic through this plastic emoji be a good thing? Now ask yourself this; If this is the magic bullet to stop "hackers" and malware, why doesn't every company have one? How did Home Depot, Target, Michaels, the DNC, on and on and on have security issues when they could have had a magic emoji to protect them?

Response? "BUY IT SO YOU CAN TEST IT!!!!"

basically, it's a button that controls the app that you use to control your appliance

directly using the appliance's buttons was too simple, we had to make it absurdly complex

every time I see the new shit they come up with, and think they reached the bottom. and every damn time, they manage to dig themselves further down the pit of idiocy.
