You are not dreaming, it's really real and nobody expect that happened. Nintendo announced the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition (Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System in Europe) today as a surprise. This small console includes the console itself (which is a replica of the original NES console) with HDMI output so you can play it on your big TV, an controller (which is also a replica of the original controller) that can also been use for the Wii and Wii U and 30 games including Super Mario Bros., Kirby's Adventure, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man.

Here is the full list of the 30 games

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
Dr. Mario
Excitebike
FINAL FANTASY
Galaga
GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS
GRADIUS
Ice Climber
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Mario Bros.

Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics
SUPER C
Super Mario Bros.

The console will be released in both North America and Europe on November 11th for 60$. The controller will also be sold separatly for 9.99$. The North American version will have an AC adapter, while the European version (including UK) won't have one, but there is a USB port in the box.

That's cool, I wonder if the games will be built-in, or be actual cartridges so that you can play games not included.

(This really reminds me of those 51 games in one cartridges NES bootlegs)

So apparently, this is a thing:

[thumbnail]

Includes 30 games, priced at 59.99$.

I have mixed feelings. While it seems the games are priced at 2$, some of them aren't that great.

Also, it seems it only has an HDMI entrance, which sucks, since the TV in the living room is a CRT (Might get a converter).

Also, the extra controllers are priced 9.99$ and they work on the wii u for nes gtames (conversively, you can use the classic controller (pro) here too)

Adding to what I saw on the TS thread, a bit bummered for some games included.

Also, it has been confirmed this won't play cartridges, so you're locked to the 30 games :/

But... why?

Seems like a pretty bad design choice, I don't see any reason why that wouldn't be possible due to hardware.

Perfect, I was just looking to buy 30 30-year old games that I can play for free with minimal effort. Obviously worth the price tag. Who needs Xenoblade Chronicles X when you can play these historic masterpieces?

Yes, missed opportunity.

I mean, SEGA has one of these many licensed clones and they can run cartridges and even come preloaded with 80 games. (However, user reports the emulation and overall quality is poor, since it's outsourced)

I'm fine with it, those are all the games I want. :P

Plus, the good thing is your don't have to keep up with said games. Once you get it, there's no chance of you losing your games if they're installed (unless you somehow lose the console ._.)

Anyway, I do like that Nintendo is doing this. I'll be buying. :D

I hope they do this with SNES games too, but doesn't seem probable.

I don't think it will stay that way, at least if people are interested in modding the console.

If it's just a box that contains the ROM's it should be relatively easy to make it run any NES game you want.

If you are willing to/know how to mod the console, then at that point you might as well use an emulator.

Well, why not?

Some people like to play on a real console as opposed to a computer.

^^Pretty much.

I hate DS emulators, even. It's hard for me to control. That's why I prefer the console. :P

Depending on how the games are stored.

You'll need to hardmod the console anyway if you wan't to write different games.

Yeah, I would maybe consider it if they actually released a SNES version of this thing. The SNES library is infinitely better than the steaming pile of skunk feces that is the NES game library.

But it's not impossible.

I guess we'll see how it works when it actually comes out.

Not necessarily, notice how the box says "pre-installed"? It does appear to have a * next to it so that might mean nothing.

EDIT:
Also it looks like the controller just plugs into the back of a Wiimote, so I might just buy one and stick to using my modded wii for nes games.

Pre-installed means pre-installed, that would be pretty misleading.

They already confirmed only those 30 games will be.

And despite having an * next to it, my best guess would be the * indicates somewhere what games are included :P

That's pretty misleading if it is the case, because it would suggest the ability to install more.

Not really, just having an asterisk doesn't suggest anything, especially when the full meaning of it is on the same box.
