yeah, there's that too

although arguably, all those diseases and other death causes helped balance the human population -- now there are just too many humans and the whole ecosystem is suffering

Um, the overpopulation crisis isn't really apparent in the US or in most developed countries. It's more apparent in developing countries like India or Nigeria, where there's a lack of education and lack of access to birth control.

Hell, Japan's birth rate is lower than its death rate, and even though the country is crowded, it would actually hurt them in the long run.

That, and lack of good contraceptives especially in places like Niger. In many developed countries, like in Germany, growth rates are actually going down.

Well, anyway, in a similar note, I don't get why we get complaints about "sticking to the dumb start bar" when I really dislike the... thing where there are squares everywhere and it looks like it's going to be hard to find things when I'd rather use file explorer or the quick launch or the start menu (I like to keep my desktop icons at a minimum and look at people who cram their desktop with icons with a scoff).

This is hilarious.

I'm not changing my operating system anytime soon. Windows 7 was and continues to be Windows at its best - Ever since, not just Windows but almost everything computer software-wise has been going downhill.

If operating systems were... houses

MS-DOS

It's like your grandma's house. It looks old, it smells old, it feels old, it is old. The walls have those ugly flowery wallpapers.

Don't count on browsing the web from that house. The closest thing you have is one of those weird telephones that are operated by dragging a wheel several times to dial a number.

You also have a TV set. One of those oldschool CRT's with a VCR sitting on the top.

Sometimes you get power outages. The wiring is obsolete and, well, not in the best condition, which can cause fuses to blow.

Windows

The Windows house can be one of these standard houses. Built from a few standardized plans, they all look the same, except they have their blinds colored differently.

The Windows house comes with modern fittings that need regular attention. It also has its share of problems, but for most of them you can fix them or have specialized men fix them for you.

It doesn't age well, though. Once it's really worn, your best solution is to raze it and build a new one.

The Windows 8 house is a revolution. All the Windows houses so far looked fairly modern for their time and had a consistent style. The Windows 8 house, however, looks like two buildings of different styles crashed into eachother.

The Windows 10 house has the same style as the Win8 one, but comes with all new fittings.

You share the house with a couple Microsoft agents. It's basically like living with your parents when you're 6.

Or worse. The Microsoft agents don't tell you to clean your room, they do it for you. They decide where goes what and what to keep or dispose. They also decide what you eat for dinner, when you shower, etc... When there's maintenance to do, they force you to do it whenever they deem good.

They also constantly watch you, analyzing your life, writing it down and sending it to Microsoft. They say they do that to give you a better experience (like choosing better ads to display on the giant screens that are installed in the walls).

You have no say over all that. If you try to remove the Microsoft agents, Microsoft burns your house down.

MacOS

The MacOS house is sleek, elegant, modern. That's about it for the advantages.

If you're moving in from another non-MacOS house, forget about keeping your appliance. The power outlets in the MacOS house are proprietary, and you can only use Apple appliance. It's 10 times more expensive, have fun.

(you can find adaptors... on the black market -- Apple sues anyone who tries to sell them legally)

No maintenance for you, fool! You'll have to call Apple to do it for you.

Your life will have to fit Apple's description of an ideal life. For example, there's no taking a nap, you can only use the bed from 9PM to 7AM.

However, you can relax and watch a movie... that Apple approves of. Or watch TV on a channel Apple approves of. Or drink a drink Apple approves of.

Same deal for food. You'd like a nice pizza? Don't count on eating anything other than salad if you're overweight. However, underweight people aren't forced to gain weight, amusing.

It also forces you to eat 5 fruit and veggies a day. No going to bed before you have consumed your fruit and veggies!

Linux

The Linux house may be any house. You plan it and build it yourself. Maybe you get help doing that, but in the end the house is to your liking.

Or you may get one of those old houses and renovate it to your liking.

However, this isn't the MacOS house-- you will run into problems with it. Often easily fixable. Sometimes obscure. Bathroom light won't work past midnight, or cupboards can't be closed, or whatever...

Android

The Android house is a camping car. You can drive it around, and go to whatever places you like with it.

However, you will need to find a place with a power supply if you want to stay for long.

While it keeps you and your belongings safe, you don't really feel at home. It's small, and not much space for your things either.

Hey, StapleButter, I think Apple likes to impose arbitrary crap like having people to press Ctrl + Command + C or something to get a screenshot instead of a Print Screen. Or, every function uses the stupid command butterfly key rather than Ctrl, which I feel is a bit less intuitive than Ctrl (I keep using my thumb when I like using the pinky for doing these functions).

For instance, in Apple's case, opening a door requires pressing an additional button like the command key before you open the door.

However, it is still easier to code in Apple compared to Windows so maybe bring that up??

not quite, though

for example, see their keyboard layout VS the regular one: they hid all the 'ugly' characters you don't use often, thus making coding a pain (need to remember some absurd key combination to type a [ or { )

Well, I'm seeing pictures of mac keyboards, and they have brackets and braces there (but no PrintScreen, so there, random key combination for that). BUT the French ones don't have it. OMG what the hell? That's actually pretty disgusting; I can't even do wiki editing as easily since it has some use for brackets and braces. Overall, though, I'm not a fan of those keyboards. This also includes the laptop ones, but at least the laptop computers need a flat keyboard. But even the keyboards for Mac desktop are flat. I mean... why? I like elevation on keyboards.

I decided to do my own version.

If operating systems were restaurants!

MS-DOS: They serve meat made of wood. They taste like crap when eaten or licked. They earn $10 only a year and this year, they will bankrupt.

Windows:
Windows 98: FUN FACT: After MS-DOS's restaurant failed, Windows bought it.

This was one of the first restaurants made in the Windows Era. They make hamburgers, fries, potatoes, and burritos. Since their oven requires internet (just go with it), it may or may not work sometimes. The food is usually jpg or bmp quality most of the time. However, when someone puts their own ingredients on it (not Microsoft's), it tastes pretty darn good. The bathroom is a different story. It is a maze. This is meant to be homage to the maze screensaver in the actual 98. The best part is that Bonzi Buddy is banned from the restaurant. Just like some fancy restaurants, they play midi music instead of actual music. Some of the music is also really glitchy and hurt someone's ears. Thankfully, Microsoft had free earplugs after a lawsuit.

Windows XP: After the success of the first restaurant by Windows, they made the sequel: Windows XP! This restaurant had a pinball machine that usually got spammed. They still had midi files at the music sadly. The music however, sounded a lot better than 98 music. The food also had png and gif versions. They tasted way better than bmp and jpg. This is when Bonzi Buddy was more often. He was the Jar Jar Binks of the restaurant constantly annoying the heck out everyone. They even got a lawsuit from parents, who caught Bonzi telling kids what their parent's emails were. The punishment would be to play E.T on the Atari for 9000 years. The movies were YTPS made with Windows Movie Maker and some other weird movies made with the stupid software. The restaurants walls were made with MS Paint and it had the U face that StapleButter drew. The stoves are also improved with the Norton software. It scans viruses in the stove. One day though, a virus was so bad not even Norton could fix it.

Windows 7: This was the last best restaurant they ever made. It had much better walls and no Bonzi Buddy. But he was found stealing money at the cash register once. He was arrested for life afterwards. Softonic works at the cash register and gives them tutorials. They 100 virus scanners for the stove. Unlike the first restaurant it does not have any music. They have a guy that farts in a bathtub as entertainment. After this restaurant, Windows went downhill

Mac: They serve apples. EDIT: But it is not as simple as you may think.
LeftyGreenMario used to work at the restaurant and he gave me this information:
Posted by LeftyGreenMario
The apples are also overpriced and you can't enter the restaurant unless you're wearing Apple-brand clothes and park in specific inconvenient spots as Apple allocates. and the hours are from 12:00PM to 1:32 PM. The restaurants are often crowded because lol apple hype so you'll have to wait for hours until it's your turn.

Linux: They Cooked Penguins.

Android: A pizzeria. It cooks many good pizzas but has the have the old Domino's Pizza like style. They all taste like cardboard and have weird commercials. Ads are everywhere on their website and restaurants. The menu has a drink called "Anti-Ads".

So, what do you think?

If operating systems were... controllers

Windows XP:
A controller that fits all needs. Standard USB controller, but not supported by anyone as it is prone for breaking. Buttons may break, joystick may be stuck in a certain position, and all that stuff.

Windows Vista:
A controller that is too fucking big and expensive, only a few people actually got it. It was filled to the brim with unnecessary features, and those raised the price when no one even used them.

Windows 7:
A more comfortable controller, with a few options to make your experience more comfortable. Highly rated and recommended.

Windows 8 and 10:
The controller was like a tablet. Controls were integrated into the tablet instead of making a border around the screen and putting buttons. The tablet can crash frequently, and took 2 minutes to fully be recognized by the console.

Mac:
It's very sleek and awesome, there's a limited addition for more features.
If something breaks, you will have to buy a new controller.
Hence why people are taking really good care of these, as they are really expensive controllers.

Linux:
It's a blank controller. You are the one who must make it.
Maybe the accept button will now be the back button, maybe the controller will not be recognized. It's up to you to figure out these flaws.

Sadly, Apple does this on purpose. They sell their own closed-sourced technology that are only compatible with their accessories. Yet, people somehow have the money to buy the overpriced products. It pisses me off when people are self-centered about their iPhone. You can give them many reasons why other OSes (like Android) are better than iOS. Yet, they'll argue that security is better and that it looks beautifully simple and original.

rule #1: don't argue with an Apple fanboy

it's like arguing with a brick, except the brick isn't annoying

(and the brick doesn't feed the Earth-devouring dollar-shitting monster that Apple is part of)

it's like for mobile phone chargers, guess who refused to follow the microUSB standard? yep, Apple (and uh, not like a proprietary charger is what keeps them from going bankrupt)

I remember owning an iPod, and I was surprised to find out that yes, MP3 players can be used as storage devices for your music, and that it's actually a regular practice among them. With the iPod, every fucking time your iTunes gets broken up, you have to resync the damn thing to your specific iTunes libraby. It's a fucking pain in the ass, and this didn't make me regret switching to a generic MP3 player at all.

iTunes is also crap when you have media players like Media Monkey. The damn thing can't even play .flac files; I think Apple forces you to convert them to an Apple format, even though .flac is a royalty-free format.

I really really hate Apple.

what about Google then

I tried buying music through their thing, but nope you aren't getting the music files you moron, they're all safe in the cloud, and no way to download them

I'm this close to pirating music (and actually I have saved a bunch of youtube videos)

Can't you also buy through Amazon as well?

I already pirate music anyway; screw the RIAA and record companies who make 90% of the profit when you buy a CD.
