So you got the free version of VS2015, all good.

The trial period expired, you need to register. Why that still exists is beyond me, it's like Microsoft goes out of their way to ignore feedback, but whatever.

The registration/whatever form is presented in that "lol I'm a smartphone app in your computer" format. That's stupid, but whatever. You enter your credentials, all good. Then:

Error SP8547896574534: can't finish operation, go fuck yourself

Some googling reveals that the error happens because you are a sane person and don't use IE. Yes, you read this right. Their piece of shit registration system relies on a recent version of IE to work right. So if you don't use IE, you may have left it unupdated or removed it alltogether. And their wonderful coding assumes that a recent IE is present, and fails rather ungracefully if that's not the case.

Solutions?

1. Download a recent version of IE. It takes ages.

2. Turn Windows Update on and let it install a shitton of updates. Maybe you'll be good the next day.

3. Create a BAT file with the following contents:
@echo off
set _date=%DATE:/=-%
DATE <insert date here>
start devenv.exe
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000 >NUL
DATE %_date%

<insert date here> should be the date where you installed VS. Or a date that happens to be before the expiration date.

Every time you need VS, launch your BAT script and give Microsoft a big middle finger.

Enjoy.

Is there a reason why you would not just use the free, community edition? Never had any problems with it.

that's what I'm using

but even when it's free, Microsoft still forces you to register it because they're idiots
