I want to install a Linux OS on a crapped-out laptop.
---
Specs:

Windows edition: Windows 8

Rating: 2.0 Windows Experience Index

Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N2820 @ 2.13GHz 2.13 GHz

Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.89 GB usable)

System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Pen and Touch: No Pen or Touch Input is available for this Display.

Windows activation: Windows is activated
---
Can somebody recommend an OS for me? And maybe a guide on how to install (or a link to a user-friendly how-to)?

I recommend Xubuntu.

Easier for beginners and is recommended from people who just switched form windows.

I run Lubuntu on my 2011 Intel Atom netbook with 1 GB of RAM. It's okay.

And I would say, don't Install any kind of Ubuntu on a Laptop like that.
Seriously, Ubuntu is the most widely used Distro, so Support can be found anywhere, but Ubuntu is filled with Scriptkiddies, and gets Bloated with every new Release, for no particular reason.
Besides, every Ubuntu Version Upgrade will fuck up your entire OS Installation.

The finest Linux Distro I ever used so far, was Arch Linux:
Lightweight, comes exclusively with the necessary things, is a Rolling Release Distro (so everything is Up-to-Date, without the need to ever Upgrade your entire OS, nor Repo's)...

However, Arch Linux is definitely not a beginner-friendly Distro.
But fortunately, there's a Linux Distro based on Arch: Manjaro.
Manjaro is basically Arch Linux, but way easier to Install, both before Installing, and after Installing, it can even guide complete Retards through the whole Process!

I wouldn't suggest either Arch or Manjaro as you're completely new to Linux... Some update or something that requires user intervention will happen and you probably won't have any idea what to do.

Instead, I'd suggest using Ubuntu MATE; it's Ubuntu with the MATE desktop, which runs very well on low-end computers. I've installed it on a laptop with similar specs to what you have there and it has worked great so far.

As for distro upgrades, unlike what Yami says it really shouldn't be an issue... I've done two relese upgrades on that laptop so far, and nothing broke as a result of it.

Yami: "Manjaro is easy to use".
Nina: "Manjaro is hard to use".

I use Manjaro, I don't know about Nina.
But as I said, Manjaro is based on Arch, but includes everything needed, to make it easier for beginners:
- GUI App Installers.
- Post-Installation Script.
- Nice Interface straight away.

Well, each time I Upgrade Ubuntu, I can't Boot into it anymore.
And no, it's not some Random Hardware issue, I did it on:
1. Custom Build PC.
2. 2 Dell Laptops.
3. MacBook Pro.
4. Acer Laptop.
5. ASUS Desktop.

All of which ended up, not Booting passed an Orange/Purple Screen.

I use Arch myself, been running it for about three years now.

And yeah, I guess I gave the Ubuntu update process a bit more credit than it deserves, I have had it break a VM once.

I've already gone and installed Xubuntu (it's pretty good), but looking at these, it seems that Lubuntu would work best for me at the moment.

Thanks to all!

I suppose it depends.

Lubuntu is light, but your PC is perfectly capable of handling Xubuntu nicely.

Lubuntu is for the more old stuff.

And Xubuntu runs well even on low en hardware nicely. My friend has it on those HP mini laptop with 1GB of ram.

My laptop scored 2.0 on the Windows Expierience Index. It ran like crap, even on on xubuntu (it still ran better than my old Windows though).

Lubuntu fits my special-case-of-a-computer better for some reason.

Oh yes, in that case, go for Lubuntu.

Though perhaps the desktop environment might be a bit unfamiliar.

It uses LXDE desktop environment which is a bit more...meh compared to xfce of xubuntu.

Yeah, it sucks compared to other environments, but for low end stuff it does what is has to do.

If you mean it by how it looks like, then you've never seen IceWM before:

I'd suggest avoiding running applications in WINE if you can. It is not yet at a state where you can just use whatever Windows application you would usually use without running into issues, not to mention the complete lack of integration with the rest of the system.

Which applications were you thinking of running in it? There are most likely Linux alternatives to them.

Mostly just SM64DSe right now, but I think there is a Linux version...

If WINE isn't good, can somebody recommend one that' I'd have to pay for? (Those would HAVE to work, right?)

For the SM64DS editor, I think that works in Mono, though I may be wrong.

As you might've found out already, WINE often does not just run stuff out of the box. A lot of stuff that some applications may need to run isn't included because they don't have an implementation of it yet or whatever. You can install a package called winetricks which has a bunch of useful options for installing this stuff. You'd for instance need .NET for SM64DSe.

As for paid solutions, there's CrossOver I guess.

I just hate it, when Windows Users Install Linux, expecting to Run all their Windows Apps on it.
My reason to move to Japan was, to immerse myself into the Japanese Language, not Dutch or Polish.
I do the exact same thing with Operating Systems: Use Linux for Linux, not for Windows.
